Lazio dominated this match and Stefano Sorrentino made at least five heroic saves before Chievo snatched a 1-0 win at the death.
The Aquile needed to get back on track following their defeat at Juventus and ahead of Tuesday’s Coppa Italia quarter-final against Inter. Ciro Immobile sat out a ban with Federico Marchetti ill and Keita Balde Diao at the Africa Cup of Nations. Chievo had far worse issues, as they had lost four on the bounce – five including the Coppa Italia – and missed Sergio Pellissier, Lucas Castro, Nicolas Frey and suspended pair Riccardo Meggiorini and Bostjan Cesar.
Chievo have only lost here twice since 2004, with six draws and two wins.
Marco Parolo blasted over from a promising position, but Felipe Anderson’s ferocious volley cross-shot flashed along the six-yard box with Filip Djordjevic inches away from prodding in.
Stefano Sorrentino scrambled back to fingertip a looping Parolo header out from the far top corner, then needed a desperate double save on Sergej Milinkovic-Savic’s strike and the Parolo header on the resulting corner.
Felipe Anderson almost scored a magnificent solo effort, waltzing past three defenders, but Sorrentino stuck out a foot to parry.
Jonathan De Guzman promoted the only save of Thomas Strakosha’s first half and a Stefan Radu deflected cross skimmed the upright.
Lazio continued to dominate while Chievo sat back and Lucas Biglia’s scorcher from 35 metres out stung Sorrentino’s gloves. Milinkovic-Savic had timid penalty appeals for a collision with Fabrizio Cacciatore, but Sorrentino continued to keep Chievo in it with another great reaction save, sticking out a foot to deny Parolo as he slid on to a Felipe Anderson through ball.
After all the domination, Chievo almost took the lead when Fabrizio Cacciatore’s curler grazed a coat of paint off the far post.
Moments later, Lazio countered with Sorrentino at full stretch for a one-handed save on Lulic, then Felipe Anderson curled just wide on the rebound.
Just as it seemed to be heading for a goalless draw, Chievo struck at the other end and made Lazio pay for all those wasted opportunities.
Massimo Gobbi pulled back from the by-line down the left and Inglese’s scuffed shot bounced in off Strakosha’s knee.
