Cagliari flattened sorry Chievo 4-0 with a Joao Pedro brace, Marco Borriello and Marco Sau, but the visitors were so unlucky.
Neither side had much to play for other than pride in this mid-table tussle, but those are the ingredients for an entertaining encounter. The Flying Donkeys were feeling rather grounded after four consecutive defeats and made the trip to Sardinia without Valter Birsa, Roberto Inglese, Massimo Gobbi, Gennaro Sardo, Nicola Rigoni, Alessandro Gamberini, Nicolas Frey and Stefano Sorrentino. Fabio Pisacane was suspended for Cagliari, with Luca Ceppitelli, Daniele Dessena and Federico Melchiorri injured.
Chievo had kept a clean sheet in each of their last nine meetings with Cagliari, winning six, and were unbeaten since a 4-1 thrashing here in February 2011.
Marco Borriello turned just wide and was alert to pounce on the rebound when Andrea Seculin only parried a Panagiotis Tachtstidis strike.
It was one-way traffic and Marco Sau made it 2-0 moments later, turning Bostjan Cesar inside out with cheeky footwork to fire in at the near post.
Matters got even worse for Chievo, as they lost Fabrizio Cacciatore to injury, Riccardo Meggiorini’s solo effort forced a fingertip save on to the post and moments later the striker was stretchered off with a muscular problem.
The Flying Donkeys had a double chance, Sergio Pellissier’s shot charged down and Serge Gakpe’s follow-up meeting the same fate.
Cagliari were running riot, adding a third before the break when Seculin punched an Artur Ionita cross on to the feet of Joao Pedro.
Rafael performed a desperate save on Lucas Castro from a Gakpe knock-down, but Cagliari were on form as Sau’s chest and bicycle-kick whistled just wide.
Seculin punched away Borriello’s strike and Mariano Izco almost pulled one back for Chievo, his lob skimming the woodwork.
The final goal was rather daft, as Seculin had dealt with a Diego Farias counter-attack, but nobody helped him clear the loose ball and Joao Pedro turned in to an empty net.
