Pippo Inzaghi reveals what then-Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho confessed after the Milan striker bagged a Champions League brace in 2010.

The hitman was already getting towards the end of his career in November 2010, which is why he was initially on the bench in this group game.

With Real Madrid leading 1-0 at San Siro, SuperPippo came on at the 60th minute and within 18 minutes had turned the game around with two goals.

Pedro Leon snatched a stoppage-time equaliser for the Merengues, but the veteran had made his mark on the history books.

Inspired Inzaghi

“That was a magical night,” Inzaghi told DAZN.

“I was on the bench, but had brought with me two shirts just in case to celebrate my 69th and 70th goals in Europe. I came on and scored twice.

“I brought one of those shirts to Stefano Borgonovo and when I think back on that match, I also remember giving him the shirt.”

Borgonovo was a former Milan and Fiorentina player who was suffering from ALS, eventually succumbing to the degenerative condition in 2013.

Those goals allowed Inzaghi to match the record of European goals set by Raul, “until Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo came along…”

Speaking to DAZN, Inzaghi reveals that at the final whistle, Mourinho went over and whispered something in his ear.

“He gave me a hug and said ‘I was really hoping you weren’t going to play today.’”
