Former Inter striker Gabriel ‘Gabigol’ Barbosa has been given a two-year ban for ‘attempted fraud’ in a doping case in Brazil.

The centre-forward was found guilty of attempting to manipulate the doping test at the Flamengo training camp on April 8, 2023.

While all his teammates completed the doping tests before their 10am session, Gabigol was accused of ‘obstructing’ the officials performing the tests.

He failed to comply with the procedures, went for lunch instead, handed over the vessel of the urine sample open and then told officials this would be his ‘final’ doping test.

The ban was decided today and will run to April 2025, as it runs for two years from the date of the incident.

The 27-year-old made the much-publicised transfer from Santos to Inter in the summer of 2016 for €29.5m, but made very little impact, contributing one goal in 10 appearances and being named Worst Player in Serie A.

He went on loan to Benfica, Santos and Flamengo before the sale to the latter in January 2020 for €17.5m.
