Francesco Acerbi reportedly signed a new contract with Inter just days before he allegedly racially abused Napoli defender Juan Jesus.

The 36-year-old Italian centre back is at the centre of controversy in Serie A after allegedly calling Juan Jesus a ‘n****r’ in the closing stages of the 1-1 draw between the Nerazzurri and the Partenopei on March 17.

Acerbi and Juan Jesus were both interviewed by FIGC Prosecutor Giuseppe Chinè on Friday morning, where the latter reiterated his allegations and the former continued to protest his innocence, claiming that he’d been misheard. A verdict is expected at some point next week.

Pasquale Guarro of Calciomercato.com details how Acerbi and his representatives recently had a meeting with Inter’s directors at their Viale della Liberazione headquarters, where he quietly signed a new two-year contract with an option for a third, just days before the racism row kicked off.

There are conflicting reports regarding the Nerazzurri’s position regarding the incident, with some claiming that the club will look to cut ties with the 36-year-old in the summer should he be found guilty, and others suggesting that he’ll continue to move forward with the club.

Acerbi stats this season

This season, the 36-year-old Italian centre back has seen 2567 minutes of action across 32 total matches with Inter, scoring two goals and providing two assists in that time.
