The stadium, inaugurated in 1965, is named after one of Empoli’s all-time stars Carlo Castellani, one of the club’s most prolific scorers. The striker’s tragic death at the Mauthausen concentration camp during World War II is remembered with a plaque at the entrance to the Tribuna section of the stadium.

The ground is easy to get to on foot from any part of the town and is around 10 minutes’ walk from the local railway station.

Given the town’s population of just under 50,000, games rarely sell out.
