Jorginho notes that Mateo Retegui is young and can still improve, but admits he expected a tough game against Venezuela: ‘They know when they can provoke and how to fall down.’

The Arsenal midfielder played a key role in Italy’s 2-1 win over Venezuela on Thursday as he was introduced from the bench in the second half and provided the assist for Retegui’s winner.

The Azzurri struggled more than expected against the South Americans, but a Retegui brace helped them win their first match in the USA during the March break.

“It was a tough game. Many underestimated Venezuela, but they’ve lost just once in the last ten matches. They concede just once per game, and you can see they are well-organized tactically and very aggressive,” Jorginho told Rai Sport.

“They have experienced players. They know how to play, when they must fall down and how. They know when they can provoke here and there to have an advantage. They are good at doing so and if somebody expected an easy game, they were wrong because we knew it would have been difficult.”

What must the Azzurri learn from these matches which are played only three months before the Euros?

“It means to represent our country. We must see these matches as an opportunity to grow as a group and as a team and never think it’s just a friendly because every time you wear this shirt, you must be ready to play for something important,” Jorginho replied.

Lastly, he was asked his thoughts on Retegui. The 24-year-old has now scored four goals in five appearances with La Nazionale. He made his debut only a year go, finding the net in a 2-1 loss against England at the Stadio Maradona.

“I think he has an important quality in front of the goal. He has an eye for the goal and is starving to score,” Jorginho replied.

“He is young and has room for improvement, which I think is the most exciting thing for those who love football. He can do even more; it only depends on him.”
