Sampdoria and their coach Andrea Pirlo were struck down by food poisoning after a celebratory fish supper before the derby with Spezia.

According to Il Secolo XIX newspaper, the squad had lunch at a local restaurant that specialised in seafood.

Something evidently went wrong, as Pirlo confessed in a press conference that he, several members of his staff and above all the players were struggling with horrible stomach problems.

Fabio Depaoli was the worst affected and had been meant to start the Serie B match against Spezia, but was only ready for the bench.

The paper claims even that wasn’t particularly safe, as he had to run off into the locker room to be sick during the second half.

Others weren’t even able to be at the stadium because of their symptoms, such as Gerard Yepes, Daniele Ghilardi, Antonio Barreca and Andrea Conti, which the newspaper described as ‘dysentery.’

Despite being decimated by some dodgy seafood, Samp still managed to pick up a 0-0 result against Spezia.
