Marco Borriello will not be returning to Genoa “for two reasons,” explained director of sport Stefano Capozucca.
There were reports the Roma striker was heading back to the club where he first found success, netting 19 goals in 35 games in 2007-08.
He is considered an alternative to Genoa's first target, Fiorentina hitman Alberto Gilardino.
“Borriello is certainly a great player and we were happy to have had him in our squad in the past,” said Grifone director Capozucca.
“But he will not return to Genoa for two reasons. The first is we have other objectives for our strike force.
“The second reason is his wages are beyond our means.”
Capozucca also commented on Inter's declared attempts to sign Rodrigo Palacio.
“He is a fundamental player for us, so there are no doubts Palacio will wear the Genoa jersey this season as well.”
