Prandelli: 'Trident was key'

Cesare Prandelli admits his decision to introduce the trident attack changed the game as Italy beat Slovenia 1-0.

“We showed courage and dominated midfield, so in the end we used the three strikers,” said the Coach who has now officially qualified for Euro 2012 by conceding only one goal.

It's the first time ever the Azzurri have qualified for the European Championships with two games to spare.

It had been a struggle up until the 84th minute, when substitute Giampaolo Pazzini volleyed in a real poacher's goal.

“It's difficult to find intensity at the moment. They clammed up, but all we needed was a goal to open up spaces and it showed.”

Daniele De Rossi pushed up a great deal from midfield and had some of Italy's best chances.

“Our strikers have to attack the box more, but the fact Daniele attacked the space too was a good sign.”

Mario Balotelli was also a substitute and seemed far livelier than recent outings.

“Now let's give Balotelli time to grow, the important thing is he came on with the right attitude.”

The Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence had only 8,000 people in it for the Euro 2012 qualifier.

“We will try to bring more people to the stadium with our performances.”
