Branca thankful Stek is OK after KO

Marco Branca has expressed his happiness that Roma goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg's injury is not as serious as first feared.

Stekelenburg was knocked unconscious in an accidental clash with Inter defender Lucio during Saturday night's game, but has since been discharged from hospital and returned to Rome for further tests.

Speaking to ANSA, the Nerazzurri's sporting director Branca also drew comparisons with Cristian Chivu's injury sustained away to Chievo a couple of seasons ago.

"We are very pleased that Stekelenburg is able to return to Roma's training ground. So an unfortunate incident seems to be turning out well.

"At Inter we went through something similar with Chivu in Verona two seasons ago, so we know that in cases like these, that the solidarity is not just front, but an important emotional aspect.

"That is why we were immediately in contact with Roma and the medical team who treated the Dutch 'keeper on Saturday night.

"The person who was most worried during the interval was Lucio.

"That is why our defender wanted to give an interview yesterday to send his wishes to Stekelenburg, as he hadn't been able to do that at San Siro, and to explain how pleased he was that everything was going for the best.

Branca closed with a word on the Brazilian centre-back.

"Lucio is a consummate professional, a true lover of the sport. On the pitch he gives evertyhign, but always with respect for the game, and for his opponents.

"He showed that also on this occasion."
