De Laurentiis: 'A European Napoli'

Aurelio De Laurentiis was “moved” by the San Paolo crowd in the Champions League. “Napoli will be increasingly European.”

The Partenopei had not played a home game in the top club competition for 21 years, but the atmosphere was astounding as they beat Villarreal 2-0 last night.

“The music of the Champions League theme and the enthusiasm of the San Paolo crowd combined beautifully with splendid choreography and a stadium that returns to where it belongs, in the top level of Europe,” the President told Radio Marte.

“It was a splendid tribute to the squad and a marvellous sight for the foreigners who were watching us all over the world. I was moved.

“Against Villarreal we saw what Walter Mazzarri has always asked for, as putting the opponent down with a super start is the way to go. Maybe a third goal would've been even better to rule out any hope of a comeback.”

Napoli are now second in Group A on four points behind Bayern Munich's six, while Manchester City only have one point.

“Bayern Munich did us a favour by beating Manchester City. We can target qualification and I asked for that before the tournament began because we have to make up places in the world ranking. Napoli must lay solid foundations on the international stage.”

The Azzurri are also flying high in Serie A and travel to face Inter at San Siro on Saturday evening.

“It will be a very difficult game for us, as we are playing against a strong squad with a great Coach,” continued De Laurentiis.

“With Claudio Ranieri the team has rediscovered its unity and wants to make a good impression. Despite the fact I have other business to take care of, I'll be at San Siro on Saturday, because it's going to be a fascinating game.”
