Borriello set for Genoa return?

Marco Borriello may find an avenue out of Roma this January as reports link him with a switch to former club Genoa.

The 29-year-old has struggled to hold down a regular starting place at the Stadio Olimpico this season under Luis Enrique’s stewardship and has so far managed just two League starts. The striker’s agent intimated in late October that he would subsequently be looking to return to the transfer list in time for a January switch.

La Repubblica is one of several outlets reporting today that Genoa now represent a possible escape route for the forward. Enrico Preziosi’s club are understood to have held preliminary talks over a possible transfer in an attempt to amend the Grifone’s struggles in front of goal this season. It would be a return for Borriello after his largely successful 2007-08 campaign at Marassi.

However, a major stumbling point reportedly comes in the form of his initial contract demands. Borriello is understood to have asked that Genoa match the before-tax wage of €5.4m that the Giallorossi currently pay. Confusion also surrounds the accountability of a reported €1m severance fee that would be due to the player should he prematurely end his Roma contract.
