Gennaro Gattuso expressed his joy and relief at playing his first game since September. “It’s not easy when you’re seeing triple or even quadruple.”
The midfielder has been out of action for four months after he was diagnosed with a rare eye condition, the paralysis of the optic nerve, which affected his vision.
“It was tough staying off the field for that long. Now I just need to improve my fitness and my position on the pitch,” he said after making his comeback in Milan’s 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain.
“The most difficult thing in all these months was facing the everyday challenges. It’s not easy to get up in the morning when you’re seeing triple or even quadruple.
“My family and friends gave me the reassurance to carry on and were always close. Milan are like my family. I’ve done good and less good things in my career, but the club has always helped me out.”
This friendly match in Dubai also represented ex-Milan Coach Carlo Ancelotti’s debut on the PSG bench.
“Ancelotti is the perfect friend and always chooses the best cities to work in, like London and Paris. Maybe the next will be Moscow! I hugged him, but didn’t crush his ribs, as I’m not in good shape...”
Alexandre Pato scored the winning goal and has been heavily linked with a €45m move to Paris Saint-Germain.
“Pato has to stay,” continued Gattuso on Milan Channel. “The club and Coach said it, so I’m confirming the message. He is a player with such a strong goal average and people always expect something more because he’s capable of it.
“In order to retain the Scudetto we have to rediscover that solidity that we occasionally lacked.”
