Paolo Cannavaro admits Napoli are out for revenge against Inter in the Coppa Italia quarter-final this Wednesday.
The Vesuviani were knocked out of the competition by the Nerazzurri 5-4 on penalties in last year’s Last eight clash after a goal-less 120 minutes of play to prolong the southern side’s poor run in the competition.
Since appearing in the final in 1997, Napoli have since not progressed beyond the quarter-final stage.
“We are in a rematch with the Nerazzurri who have eliminated us from the Coppa Italia before. We want sporting revenge.
“We are motivated, we want to get through. It will be difficult to mark the likes of [Giampaolo] Pazzini and [Diego] Milito.”
In all competitions, Napoli have kept only two clean sheets since the end of October and after consecutive 1-1 draws in the League have come under scrutiny for underperforming.
“We do not feel under attack, we are calm and serene even through criticism. Napoli is still the same, we give everything in every game, we’ve dropped points in the League and won them in the Champions League when we would like them in both, so it is about balancing the scales.”
The centre-back also suggested that mistakes have contributed to the team’s recent form, more so than any struggles as a team.
“Individual errors can occur, everyone goes wrong. The important thing is that there are no departmental errors.
“As a team, we have suffered more against Palermo than we did against Siena or Bologna, unfortunately there were individual errors for two consecutive games.”
After the weekend’s draw with Siena, Mazzarri suggested that Napoli’s budget - the seventh highest in the League - means that their seventh place standing in the table is where expectations should lie.
“The statements were made in anger, I would not put so much weight on them,” commented Cannavaro when asked on the subject.
“Last year we were ninth at one stage and we finished in third place, so for us [the budget] does not count, we always play to do better. The goal? To finish as high as possible.”
