Spanish media: 'Rafa wants to be fired'

The Spanish media suggests Rafa Benitez is refusing to resign, as “he wants to be fired” by Inter to keep his wages.

The rapport between the Coach and club seems to be over after his ‘back me or sack me' statements in the wake of the Club World Cup victory.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca, that was part of a specific plan to break away without losing money.

“He wants to be fired,” said Marca journalist Arancha Rodriguez. “It'll be a matter of just a few hours, because Inter want to think about their new Coach.

“Benitez also wants to know if he has to return to Liverpool, partly to be with his daughter, or stay in Italy.”

It has been reported elsewhere that sacking Benitez would cost Inter around €8m between wages and performance-related bonuses, having won the Club World Cup and Italian Super Cup.

However, the Spanish journalist was less confident of reports that President Massimo Moratti had talks with Jose Mourinho while in Spain.

“I cannot confirm this meeting. They certainly didn't meet up this morning, as Mourinho was at the Real Madrid training ground and Moratti in his office. I don't know if they saw each other last night.”
