Giordano would take Lazio helm

Former Lazio favourite Bruno Giordano has welcomed the idea of replacing Edy Reja as Coach of the Biancocelesti.

Speculation is rife about possible replacements for the 66-year-old tactician after he handed in his resignation on Wednesday afternoon.

Although the club officially rejected it, uncertainty surrounds Reja’s future, with the Coach indicating a decision would be reached after the team’s Thursday night match against Atletico Madrid.

If he does leave, Giordano, who played made over 200 appearances for Le Aquile between 1975 and 1985, has put himself forward as a candidate.

“From President Lotito there was an approach three or four years ago,” the 55-year-old former striker claimed to RTL 102.5.

“If a call came now, of course I would be available to talk. Lazio represents an important opportunity for any Coach, let alone for me, who has a loving relationship with these colours.

“For me to train Lazio would be a dream, and for sure I would bring forward my ideas as a Coach. I wouldn’t go just because it is Lazio.”

Vincenzo Montella, despite his strong Roma connections, is the latest name linked with the possibly vacant post, but Giordano believes that Lotito needs to bring in someone who knows the club better.

“It would be an important message and a useful choice for brightening the environment, uniting fans, the team and the management.

“But he must find a credible name. We need a real Coach, with experience, not one that uses six months to get to know the players.”

Lazio are currently level on points with third place Udinese in the table, with a real chance of securing Champions League qualification.

Giordano reflected on why he thinks Reja is considering leaving the club, despite this great position.

“From the outside, with the team in third, it looks like a surreal situation. If Reja, who is a serious person, decides to resign, then he will have his reasons.

“I think the cause is something that has lasted a long time.

“For fans of Lazio, please do not take sides, do not go against the team, club or Coach. There are certain moments when you need unity. There is an appointment in 10 days, the derby, and we must go into it as one.”
