De Canio: 'Lecce had three penalties'

Lecce Coach Gigi De Canio was furious with the referee after their defeat to Roma. “We were denied at least three penalties.”

The Salentini had been able to cancel out Mirko Vucinic's opener with a goal from Guillermo Giacomazzi, but David Pizarro converted a last-minute spot-kick for the 2-1 result.

“We were denied at least three penalties, in my view,” slammed De Canio. “The referee put the whistle to his lips, but then didn't feel able to blow. You judge the incidents for yourselves.”

Lecce had beaten Juventus here a fortnight ago and held both Milan and Inter to stalemates at the Via del Mare.

“They were different games. David Di Michele guaranteed us greater depth against Juve, but Jeda does not have those characteristics. Roma pass the ball around much better than Juve and Mirko Vucinic knows how to protect the ball.”

De Canio surprised many when he made a tactical substitution just before half-time, replacing Carlos Grossmuller with striker Daniele Corvia.

“I made a change, but I'd pick the same starting XI again. Looking back it's obvious I might've made other choices, but you can never know before a game how things will pan out.

“I had used an extra midfielder to filter the ball on its way through to their forwards, but we were unable to play the way we know how. With another striker we managed to put Roma under greater pressure.”
