Davide Santon is back in the Italy squad after a January move to Cesena. “This club is exactly what I needed.”
The full-back had been reticent to leave Inter after Jose Mourinho launched him into the spotlight aged 18, but had barely featured in recent months due to injury and poor form.
“I can say it now: Cesena is exactly what I needed,” said Santon on his return to the Azzurri.
“I am happy, rediscovered my confidence in a relaxed atmosphere where you can work well. There is so little tension there, we play good football and the Coach has clear ideas.”
Santon was at the 2010 World Cup, but risked peaking in his career too soon and vanished from the international scene.
“Cesare Prandelli kept his word. He called me up as soon as I started playing regularly again. It was a great boost to my confidence to know he believed in me.
“My position can vary, as I play right, left, full-back or winger. However, tactical versatility can become a limitation rather than an advantage.
“I feel good on the right now, especially as if I go up then I don't have to turn in order to cross, like I do on the left.”
Nominally a right-back, Santon was transformed into a left-back at Inter to accommodate Douglas Maicon.
