Francesco Totti beat Roberto Baggio's all-time Serie A scoring record and declared: “The King of Rome is not dead.”
The Roma captain spear-headed the comeback to win 3-2 at Bari with his brace, even though Jean-Francois Gillet's fingertips prevented him completing a hat-trick from the penalty spot.
With 206 Serie A goals, Totti has overtaken Baggio on 205 to become the fifth most prolific hitman of all time.
“I know what I can give and that will never die,” he said when showing off a T-Shirt that read in English ‘The King of Rome is not dead.'
“I am happy to have achieved another record and hope to continue at this level. It's such a shame I got the second penalty wrong, as I was about to compromise our entire campaign.
“Then with strength, grit and determination, the team fought back to grab the victory. We reacted like a top team.
“If we had only drawn here, then it was all over for fourth place. Instead we're a point behind Lazio and can put pressure on them. It's up to them now to put in a great performance against Juventus on Monday night.”
The win keeps them in the race for a Champions League spot, but Daniele De Rossi and Simone Perrotta saw red, so could be suspended for the rest of the season.
“When you don't achieve certain things on the field then you react and act out of turn. The squad is united, though, and wants to prove it is still alive.”
