Napoli appeal Cavani ban

Napoli have announced they will appeal against Edinson Cavani's three-match ban. “He was not insolent towards the referee.”

The striker was sent off for a second bookable offence during the 2-1 defeat to Lecce on Sunday and will miss the rest of the season if the ban is upheld.

“Napoli will lodge an appeal,” club lawyer Mattia Grassani told Radio Crc.

“The referee's report has come in and Valeri states Cavani went over to him after the red card, giving him two pats on the shoulder. ‘Well done, you couldn't wait.'

“These are the words and the referee must obviously be trusted, but there is a question of interpretation.

“The Disciplinary Commission inflicted the ban because it thought the statement was ‘sarcastic and insolent.'

“I can understand the sarcastic part, but I really doubt they could be construed as insolent.”
