Mazzarri: 'Napoli's historic moment'

Walter Mazzarri realises Napoli face “an historic event and it must be a party” against Inter, returning to the Champions League after 21 years.

The tournament was called the European Cup the last time the Partenopei took part with Diego Armando Maradona in the squad and with one point on Sunday night they can be certain of entry.

“Tomorrow is a fundamental game. It will be an historic event, because Napoli have not qualified for the Champions League since the days of Maradona,” said the Coach.

“It would mean making a dream come true. If it goes well tomorrow, I pledge that I'll try to stop smoking. We have had an extraordinary journey and must not forget that.

“Last Sunday we dropped a match point with three rounds to go, thanks to an incredible goal from Javier Chevanton. Now we want to finish the race on home turf, even if we have another chance after that against Juventus.

“I fear Inter, as they are a great squad in exceptional form. We must avoid feeling the pressure of this event too much, without thinking that a draw would suit both teams.”

Napoli are certainly weakened for this match, as Edinson Cavani and Giuseppe Mascara are both suspended, so Ezequiel Lavezzi is likely to play as centre-forward with Juan Zuniga in support.

“The San Paolo fans know to put Napoli ahead of all else,” continued Mazzarri. “Tomorrow it must be a party, enjoying and celebrating what we have all achieved together. People pass through, but the fans remain.”

One of those passing through could well be the Coach, who announced he may not stay next season.

“Once we achieve our objective, we will meet with the club and talk about the future. I thank President Aurelio De Laurentiis for his kind words, but after the tournament is the time to stop and consider.

“We begin with certain ideas, but objectives can also change.”

It's believed Mazzarri wants guaranteed signings to strengthen the squad if they enter the Champions League.
