Sorrentino has Italy ambition

Chievo goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino hopes to make Italy boss Cesare Prandelli change his mind so he calls him up in the near future.

The 31-year-old was superb last season and had thought he stood a chance of filling in for Gigi Buffon during the latter's injury lay-off.

However, Prandelli has decided to put his faith into two younger 'keepers in Bologna's Emiliano Viviano and Palermo's Salvatore Sirigu.

Pioli doubts talk of Inter crisis

Chievo Coach Stefano Pioli does not believe the stories of a struggling Inter in crisis, but welcomes back Sergio Pellissier.

“Are Inter weaker than expected at the moment? Are you kidding? Look at the squad that Rafa Benitez has at his disposal for this game,” said Pioli.

“He has the likes of Esteban Cambiasso, Dejan Stankovic, Lucio, Davide Santon, Wesley Sneijder and Javier Zanetti. These are world class champions.

Eto'o risks ban for 'Zidane' headbutt

Samuel Eto'o risks a long ban after the Inter striker was caught on camera head-butting Cesar in a Zinedine Zidane-Marco Materazzi style.

The off the ball incident occurred 38 minutes into today's Serie A match against Chievo.

The two players had argued a few moments earlier and Eto'o opted to take 'revenge' by running towards him to head-butt Cesar in the chest.

The referee, assistants and fourth official at the Stadio Bentegodi did not see the incident, but it was caught on camera.

Pioli: 'Tempo troubled Inter'

Chievo Coach Stefano Pioli explains how he managed to defeat reigning Treble winners Inter. “We kept up the tempo.”

The Flying Donkeys secured a 2-1 victory at the Bentegodi thanks to Sergio Pellissier and Davide Moscardelli.

“Inter were attacking us with many players and we wanted to be quick on the counter with Cyril Thereau and Pellissier. We did it,” smiled Pioli.

“The Nerazzurri took a good approach to the game in a difficult arena, but we did well to keep up the tempo and maintain a solid unit.”

Benitez: 'Eto'o was provoked'

Rafa Benitez insists Inter's only problems are down to injuries and Samuel Eto'o was provoked. “He lost control.”

The 2-1 defeat at Chievo was a disaster for the Nerazzurri, who are now nine points off leaders Milan.

It could be much worse, though, as Eto'o was caught on camera head-butting Bostjan Cesar in the chest.

In an incident very similar to Zinedine Zidane's 2006 World Cup Final attack on Marco Materazzi, the off-the-ball incident was not spotted by the officials.

Cesar: 'Eto'o didn't even apologise'

Bostjan Cesar says “Samuel Eto'o did not even apologise” after head-butting him in the chest in scenes reminiscent of the 2006 World Cup Final.

During the first half of Inter's 2-1 defeat at Chievo, Eto'o got into a row with the defender, claiming he had been hit on the face by a trailing arm.

The Cameroon striker then reacted a few moments later by head-butting Cesar in the chest, unseen by the officials.

“Eto'o is a great player, but I think this sort of behaviour simply should not happen,” said the defender.

Wounded Inter worry Pioli

Chievo boss Stefano Pioli is fearing an Inter backlash when the two teams meet this weekend.

The Nerazzurri are feeling the pressure after last Sunday's 1-0 defeat to derby rivals Milan left them six points off the top in what is their worst start to a season post-Calciopoli.

"A few people might think that this is the best time to face Inter, but I disagree," the tactician noted.

"We'll play a wounded Inter on Sunday, an angry side which will be desperate to hit back after a derby loss and some not exceptional games.

Samp and Chievo lose captains

Sunday's match between Sampdoria and Chievo will be without stars like Angelo Palombo, Franco Semioli and Sergio Pellissier.

The Blucerchiati have not even got captain Palombo on the bench, joining Luciano Zauri and Semioli on the treatment table.

Antonio Cassano is naturally absent, as Samp have started proceedings to have his contract terminated for 'insubordination.'

Chievo are also forced to do without their captain, as striker Pellissier is still struggling with an injury.

Sorrentino set to stay at Chievo

Stefano Sorrentino has pledged his future to Chievo amid speculation that he might leave the club in the January transfer window.

The 31-year-old was said to have been unsettled after not getting a big move in the summer following an excellent season in Verona.

Juventus were among the clubs interested in signing him, but opted for Marco Storari when Chievo refused to lower their asking price.

Speaking to Tutto Mercato Web, Sorrentino said: "I stayed at Chievo and now I am only thinking about doing well with this shirt.

The First Flight of the Donkeys

Ahead of this weekend's clash, Giancarlo Rinaldi goes back to August 2001 when Chievo made their top-flight bow at Fiorentina in spectacular fashion

The Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence has seen some famous events over the years. David Bowie and Madonna have gigged there, Giancarlo Antognoni almost died on the pitch during a match and it hosted a World Cup quarter-final at Italia '90. Nine years ago, however, it was the runway from which the Flying Donkeys of Chievo Verona first took to the skies.
