Barreca en route to Genoa

Antonio Barreca is heading back to Serie A for Genoa just a year after he was sold to Monaco, with a loan spell at Newcastle United completed.

According to Sky Sport Italia, the 24-year-old left-back will complete his transfer to Marassi on Monday.

He only joined Monaco for €10m last summer as part of the deal taking Soualiho Meite to Torino, then was loaned to Newcastle United in January.

The Magpies won’t take up their €9m option to buy, having paid €1.15m for the six-month loan.

Report: Samp agree Depaoli deal

Sampdoria have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Chievo right-back Fabio Depaoli.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio’s website, talks between the two clubs have ended positively and the deal is about to be finalised.

Depaoli was a rare bright spark for Chievo last season, breaking through as a Serie A player with 33 appearances and four assists.

The 22-year-old has seven Italy Under-21 caps but was overlooked for the European U21 Championship.

He is a versatile performer, also capable of playing in central midfield and on the right wing.

Good riddance, Chievo

The Flying Donkeys once won hearts as plucky underdogs, but Emmet Gates saw them become the epitome of mid-table mediocrity and a Serie A eyesore.

There was once a time in which Chievo conquered the heart and minds of football fans. There was once a charm to their story: the team from the northwest district of Verona, with a population of less than 5,000 people, that rose through the Italian football pyramid to make it to the top flight and not just play with the big boys, but beat them.

Hellas Verona return to Serie A

Hellas Verona have been officially promoted after spending just one season in Serie B thanks to their comeback win over Cittadella tonight.

The Gialloblu lost the first leg of the promotion decider 2-0 away, but won their home tie by 3-0, with the minnows reduced to nine men.

They are only the second ever side to win the Final after a two-goal deficit from the first leg, as Torino came back from a 4-2 defeat in 2005-06.
