Serie B: Cittadella eliminate Brescia

Cittadella won the first promotion play-off, beating Brescia 1-0, and will now face Monza in the semi-final.

Kick-off was delayed by 29 minutes due to technical problems with VAR, which was being used for the first time in this Serie B season.

As Cittadella finished higher up the table than Brescia, sixth compared to seventh, they would be guaranteed passage to the next round if the tie was level after 90 minutes and extra time.

VAR holds up Serie B play-off

The Serie B promotion play-offs didn’t get off to the best start, as the first game to involve VAR was delayed when the technology failed.

VAR is used in Serie A, but not in Serie B, other than in the play-off stages of the competition.

That at least was the plan, but today’s game between Cittadella and Brescia saw the kick-off delayed by 29 minutes.

DAZN reporting at pitch-side explained there were technical problems in various areas.

Tonali set for permanent move to Milan

Milan have reportedly decided to keep Sandro Tonali and are ready to complete a permanent transfer from Brescia this summer.

Technical director Paolo Maldini believes the young Italian will be one of the protagonists at Milan in the future and La Gazzetta dello Sport reports the club is ready to trigger the option to sign the midfielder.

Tonali arrived on a paid loan last summer worth €10m for Brescia and Milan must add another €25m to sign the 20-year-old on a permanent deal.

Milan to sign permanent deal with Tonali

Milan are reportedly certain to trigger the option to sign 20-year-old Sandro Tonali from Brescia on a permanent deal.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports the Italian midfielder’s future will still be with the Rossoneri, despite some ups and downs during his first season at San Siro.

Milan snapped up Tonali on a paid loan with an option to buy last summer, after the 20-year-old had attracted interest from the giants in Serie A through his performances with the Rondinelle.

Serie B: Pescara coach collapses

There was a scare in Serie B this afternoon when Pescara coach Gianluca Grassadonia collapsed during a game with Brescia.

The incident occurred towards the end of the 1-1 draw at the Stadio Rigamonti.

Grassadonia seemed to briefly lose consciousness on the touchline and medics rushed to his aid.

Play was stopped for several minutes while he received treatment.

He then left the pitch with medical staff and the game was able to continue.

The 48-year-old is a former player representing the likes of Cagliari, Salernitana and Chievo.

Eder moves to Sao Paulo

Former Italy international Eder returns to Brazil, as he has signed a deal with Sao Paulo until December 2022.

The former Inter striker was recently released by Chinese side Jiangsu Suning and Sao Paulo have confirmed the move on their official website.

The Brazilian-born 34-year-old, capped 26 times by Italy, played 245 games in Serie A across spells with Empoli, Cesena, Brescia, Inter and Sampdoria.

He scored 60 times in the Italian League, but left for China in July 2018.

Ex-Genoa player Branco in intensive care

Former Genoa, Brescia and Middlesbrough full-back Branco is in intensive care and has been intubated after COVID-19 complications.

He is due to turn 57 next month and currently works with the Brazilian Federation on their youth teams.

Branco was taken into hospital on Tuesday in Rio de Janeiro with breathing difficulties and the situation has deteriorated.

Ex-Genoa player Branco in hospital

Former Brescia, Genoa and Middlesbrough full-back Branco is in hospital in Brazil after testing positive for COVID-19.

The Brazilian will turn 57 next month and played for Genoa from 1991-93, also representing Brescia, Internacional, Fluminense, Gremio, FC Porto, Flamengo, Corinthians, Middlesbrough and Metro Stars.

Branco is currently working in the Brazil national youth teams.

According to the latest reports from UOL Esporte, Branco was hospitalised in Rio de Janeiro after testing positive for COVID-19.

Tonali: 'Playing with Kessie helps a lot'

Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali said Franck Kessie helps him adapt to the new formation at the Rossoneri. ‘He’s very intelligent’.

Tonali, who arrived from Brescia last summer, played the full 90 minutes of the 1-0 defeat to Napoli on Sunday and couldn’t help the Rossoneri avoid anothe setback in the Scudetto battle.

It was Tonali’s 20th Serie A match this term and he has started 16 of them and admitted he had to adjust to a new system.
