Totti: ‘I tried to get Ibra’

Francesco Totti reveals he tried to convince the likes of Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to join him at Roma but “unfortunately we had a limit”.

Er Pupone spent his entire career with the Giallorossi, but won the Scudetto only once, in 2001.

“I’ve always said you need champions to win,” Totti said in the latest excerpt from tomorrow’s big interview with La Repubblica.

“I hoped Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic, the best players in the world would come. Not just up-front, but also defenders and midfielders.

Serie A gets Ronaldomania

Cristiano Ronaldo's arrival is not just a game-changer for Juventus, but for all of Serie A, off the field as much as on it, argues Emmet Gates.

Juventus fans were outraged. The club had again increased the prices of season tickets. This time however, there was a serious hike, with tickets rising by as much as €300. To sit in the Curva, generally amongst the cheapest seats in any stadium in Italy, was now costing in excess of €600, by far and away the highest in Serie A.

Fans protested, and many argued that for the hike in prices they wanted to see a Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi playing in black and white. Fast forward two weeks later and Juve, incredibly, delivered.

On this day: Ronaldo joins Inter

On this day in 1997, Inter completed the world record signing of Ronaldo from Barcelona.

The Brazilian had scored 47 goals in 49 games for the Blaugrana in the 1996-97 season, but the relationship quickly soured.

Barça were looking to tie the 20-year-old to a 10-year contract, but the talks ultimately collapsed and opened the door for the Nerazzurri.

“No-one thought it was possible to buy him, so I didn’t compete,” former Inter President Massimo Moratti recalled in an interview with Mi-Tomorrow this week.
