Marchisio reveals career regrets

Claudio Marchisio admits he regrets not winning the Champions League and Euro 2012 with Juventus and Italy after retiring from football.

Marchisio took to the Press room at Juventus Stadium on Thursday afternoon to confirm he had hung up his boots, and the 33-year-old lifted the lid on what it was like to make his ‘dream’ of playing for the Old Lady come true.

Prandelli makes Italy revelation

Cesare Prandelli has confessed that Italy ‘never imagined’ they would reach the Euro 2012 Final and rued facing a Spain side ‘firing on all cylinders’.

Prandelli’s Italy overcame a group containing Spain and Croatia before beating England and Germany to set up a rematch with La Roja in the Final, although they were thrashed 4-0. 

“We started with the European Championship, we never imagined we’d reach the Final,” admitted the Genoa boss in an interview with Corriere dello Sport.

Cahill reveals Mertens apology

England international Gary Cahill revealed an anecdote showing Napoli and Belgium striker Dries Mertens is “obviously a decent fella. I really respect him for that.”

The pair met in unfortunate circumstances during a friendly just ahead of Euro 2012, when Mertens shoved Cahill in the back and he clattered into teammate Joe Hart.

A fractured jaw ruled Cahill out of the tournament and they’ll meet again on Thursday in the 2018 World Cup in Kaliningrad.

Throwback: Balotelli batters Germany

Five years ago today, Mario Balotelli scored a double as Italy reached the Euro 2012 final.

The Azzurri had overcome England on penalties in the quarter-final, but were underdogs for the Germany game.

Despite scoring a fine goal against the Republic of Ireland in the group stage, Balotelli had been criticised in some quarters, after hesitating in front of goal on more than one occasion.

He was partnered up-front in Warsaw by fellow ‘bad boy’ Antonio Cassano, and both men silenced their critics to differing degrees.

Criscito 'deserved protection'
