Santos: 'Few Portugal changes'

Fernando Santos warned not to expect “too many changes” as Portugal host Italy in the Nations League. “They want to ‘avenge’ the World Cup failure.”

It kicks off in Lisbon on Monday at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

While Italy played a 1-1 draw with Poland on Friday, Portugal were in an identical result for their friendly match with Croatia on Thursday.

Chiellini: 'Jorginho fundamental'

Giorgio Chiellini said Jorginho is “fundamental” for this new Italy side and asked for “patience, as it’s damaging to pass judgment now.”

The Juventus defender spoke to La Stampa newspaper after a 1-1 Nations League draw with Poland, as they continue their campaign in Portugal tomorrow evening.

“It’s a logical consequence of the generational shift that Italy aren’t quite gelling yet. Anything contrary to that would be very surprising,” insisted Chiellini.

Rugani and Romagnoli snub Chelsea

Maurizio Sarri reportedly wants to try again for Daniele Rugani and Alessio Romagnoli to Chelsea, but Juventus and Milan won’t sell.

The former Napoli Coach is looking to strengthen his defence, as although they have a perfect Premier League record so far this season, they have been leaking goals at Stamford Bridge.

According to Calciomercato.com, that will prompt Sarri to push once again in January for Italian reinforcements at the back.

Azzurri need shaking up

After an uninspiring draw with Poland, Roberto Mancini must devise a new plan to respond against Portugal, writes Matthew Santangelo.

Prior to Friday evening’s UEFA Nations League group opener versus Poland, Italy had not played a major international match in 10 months.

The cataclysmic failure of not qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup last November meant the Azzurri faithful, and the remnants of the embarrassing Gian Piero Ventura era, had plenty of time for soul-searching at home as everyone focused on Russia. It was the wake-up call both the FIGC and Nazionale needed in hopes of restoring order and re-route the four-time World Cup winners on the right path.

The 31-year-old’s current contract with Chelsea is due to expire at the end of the season and a January exit would prevent him leaving as a free agent.
