Genoa did not apply for UEFA licence

Genoa decided not to apply for a 2020-21 UEFA licence, according to reports, so they were not rejected.

It was announced today that 16 out of 20 Serie A clubs had been granted the UEFA licence for next season, all except for Genoa, Brescia, Lecce and SPAL.

While many of them have stadium issues, so being in the bottom four assume they won’t need a licence to play in European competition, Genoa do share the Stadio Luigi Ferraris with Sampdoria.

UEFA licences to 16 Serie A clubs

A UEFA licence for 2020-21 has been granted to 16 out of 20 Serie A clubs, with Brescia, SPAL, Lecce and Genoa missing out.

The clubs can lodge an appeal within five days of the verdict.

As Atalanta’s Gewiss Stadium is still undergoing restructuring work, they have again chosen a different arena as their official base, although this can change as the work progresses.

They have picked the Mapei Stadium in Reggio-Emilia, the home of Sassuolo, although Atalanta played their Champions League games for this season at San Siro in Milan.

Champions League Final Eight in Portugal?

UEFA and the ECA are reportedly talking about a Plan B for the Champions League, namely a Final Eight tournament in Portugal concluding on August 22.

The plan currently is to complete the tournament in its usual format by finishing the Round of 16 ties that are still midway through, then the other home and away fixtures.

That would run from approximately August 4 to 29.

According to Mundo Deportivo, there is a Plan B being discussed by UEFA’s Executive Committee and the European Club Association, whose President is Juventus chief Andrea Agnelli.

CL Final moved from Istanbul?

The 2019-20 Champions League Final will be held away from Istanbul, reports The New York Times.

The Ataturk Olympic Stadium was due to host its second Final after Milan’s lost penalty shootout to Liverpool in 2005.

However, the American newspaper claims it no longer will due to ‘the ongoing crisis brought on by the coronavirus pandemic’.

According to an unnamed person ‘with knowledge of the matter’, talks are ongoing over how to finish this season’s Champions League and where the Final will be played.

Turkish Super Lig to start from June 12

The Turkish Football Federation announced the Super Lig will resume from June 12, as tournaments all over Europe get back on the field.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic is still raging, some countries have eased lockdown measures and that is also allowing the football teams to get back to work.

After the Bundesliga started up again last week, others are on track to pick up their seasons.

The Turkish Super Lig is the latest to confirm it’ll resume from June 12 and will allow five substitutions rather than three per game.

Abete no fan of Serie A play-offs

UEFA Vice-President Giancarlo Abete would be in favour of Serie A play-offs as a last resort, but ‘it wouldn’t be the end of the world’ if the Scudetto was not assigned.
