UEFA postpones club Finals

UEFA has officially postponed the Champions League and Europa League Finals as the 2020 Olympic Games look set to be held next year.

In a statement, UEFA also confirmed the Women’s Champions League Final would be put off until further notice.

Europe’s three major club Finals were scheduled to take place in May, but the outbreak of coronavirus on the continent has forced the governing body’s hand.

Italy is the country with the world’s most deaths from COVID-19 (6,077), whereas Spain rank third, France fifth and the UK seventh.

Infantino: 'Let's all save football together'

President Gianni Infantino has warned football to “prepare for the worst” but insisted FIFA will do everything they can to help. "We all have to make sacrifices".

UEFA revisit FFP regulations?

The future of European football is at stake and UEFA will have some important decisions to make regarding the Financial Fair Play regulations.

UEFA introduced FFP to prevent clubs from spending beyond their means and to avoid having a host of elite clubs carrying unsustainable levels of debt. As the world is currently dealing with a non-football related emergency, the total losses limit of €30m might have to change when football resumes.

U21 European Championship could move

Italy Under-21 European Championship qualifiers against Luxembourg and Sweden have been rescheduled, but the entire 2021 tournament could move.

The coronavirus pandemic has forced a complete reshuffle of the entire football calendar and it is still in flux as we wait to discover how long it’ll take to get back to playing regularly.

The Azzurrini had been due to play Luxembourg and Sweden later this month in qualifiers for the European U21 Championship.

UEFA reject play-offs/play-outs idea

UEFA have reportedly rejected the idea of any league incorporating play-offs and play-outs to finish their respective seasons, states La Repubblica.

The entire football calendar has been thrown into question in the midst of the Coronavirus outbreak.

Euro 2020 was officially postponed yesterday in order to give every league the necessary time to finish their championships.

La Repubblica reports however that UEFA has rejected the hypothesis of any league implementing play-offs and play-outs to wrap up their league.

Champions League games on the weekend?

There are reports that UEFA could contemplate playing the remaining Champions League season on weekends, an idea that isn’t going down well with clubs in Serie A.

Due to the Coronavirus, all championships and competitions have been suspended, pending the outbreak of the disease to eventually subside.

One hypothesis is to play the remainder of the Champions League season on weekends, with league games being played during the week in order to wrap up the season as soon as possible.

Clubs commit to concluding season

UEFA, the European Club Association, European Leagues and FIFPro Europe signed a joint resolution committing to end the season by June 30 at the latest after postponements for the coronavirus crisis.

The same summit already came to the conclusion today that Euro 2020 and the Copa America would be postponed to next June and July rather than this summer.
