Nicchi: 'Refs need guarantees'

AIA President Marcello Nicchi has revealed that the referees are “ready to restart the engine” but will need “guarantees” and are not willing to “risk lives”.

The Italian Referees’ Association has claimed that they will respect the decisions of the Italian government and insisted the match officials will only return to the pitch when it’s safe to resume play.

Central Serie A VAR from 2020-21

A statement from the FIGC and AIA confirms that Serie A will have one centralised VAR room from the 2020-21 season.

This would be similar to the system adopted during the 2018 World Cup in Russia, whereas currently each VAR booth is separate and either in or just outside the stadium.

The VAR room will be based at the Coverciano training ground, the centre of Italy’s football formation where the national team prepares for games, coaches get their badges and referees go on educational courses.

Referees to wear black armband

Referees will wear a black armband this weekend in all levels of Italian football after 25-year-old official Loris Azzaro was killed in a car accident.

Azzaro had been on his way to the airport, where he’d fly out to officiate a match, when his car crashed at approximately 6am local time.

He was 25 years old and working as a State Police cadet, but also refereeing in his spare time.

The AIA (Italian Referees Association) announced today that all referees in Italian football will wear a black armband this weekend.

Commisso: 'Did refs threaten me?'

Fiorentina President Rocco Commisso continues to criticise “arrogant” Juventus vice-president Pavel Nedved and referees. “If that was a threat, we’ll respond.”

The 3-0 defeat in Turin on Sunday sparked controversy, largely because of the second penalty awarded for a Federico Ceccherini challenge on Rodrigo Bentancur.

Nicchi: 'Refs disgusted by Commisso'

President of the Referees Association Marcello Nicchi said officials are “to use his own term, disgusted” by Fiorentina patron Rocco Commisso’s comments.

The Viola patron ranted furiously on live television after his team lost 3-0 to Juventus, protesting that the second penalty should not have been awarded.

The referee did go to view it on the VAR on-field monitor, but stood by his original decision that Federico Ceccherini had fouled Rodrigo Bentancur.

Nicchi: 'More VAR transparency'

Referees chief Marcello Nicchi has pledged to create a point of contact, which allows the most controversial VAR calls in Serie A to be “reported daily”.

Coaches, captains and referees met yesterday to discuss the use of VAR in the Italian top flight, and Nicchi assured there would be more transparency about the decisions being made.

“We want to quickly set up tools so there can be daily and weekly reports,” the AIA President said after the summit.

Clubs & refs to meet for VAR

Players and coaches will meet referees on November 19 to scrutinise the performance of VAR in Serie A.

The meeting was confirmed by FIGC President Gabriele Gravina on Tuesday, which he and referee designator Nicola Rizzoli will chair at a hotel in Rome.

Also attending will be match officials, coaches and captains of Serie A clubs, plus members of the Press.

It comes after some controversial incidents involving VAR this season, thus making a summit necessary to help foster some clarity on how the technology is used.

'De Ligt handball never a penalty'

Referees chief Marcello Nicchi insists Matthijs de Ligt’s handball “was never a penalty” and urges fans to “stop coming to games” if they think otherwise.

De Ligt drew controversy during Juventus’ 2-1 win against Bologna on Saturday as his clear handball in the box went unpunished, but Nicchi made it clear both the referee and VAR had applied the rules correctly.

Nicchi: 'Refs can't stop play for racism'

Referees’ Association President Marcello Nicchi insists those responsible for racist abuse should be “thrown in jail,” but it is not up to the official.

While in France this season, referees have stopped play several times for racist and homophobic chants, in Italy the debate rages on after Inter forward Romelu Lukaku was racially abused by Cagliari fans.

Refs could explain decisions

Referees Association President Marcello Nicchi suggests officials could explain their decisions after games and club Presidents could watch matches together in the VAR booth.

The introduction of the new technology has provided a few teething problems, particularly during the Copa America and Women’s World Cup, although Serie A is already getting accustomed to it.

Discussing plans for the 2019-20 campaign, Nicchi had some suggestions for the future.
