Nicchi hits back at De Laurentiis

The head of the Italian referees’ association, Marcello Nicchi, hits back at Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis, hinting he could be charged by the FIGC.

The Partenopei patron claimed that if Maurizio Sarri’s side finish within six points of Juventus they’ll been robbed of the Scudetto, insisting officiating errors cost them eight points.

Nicchi: Italian refs over Buffon

Refereeing chief Marcello Nicchi claims he would have sided with Michael Oliver if Gianluigi Buffon’s ‘threatening’ outburst happened in a Serie A game.

Buffon was sent off for excessive dissent towards Oliver after he took issue with the Englishman’s decision to award Real Madrid a stoppage-time penalty, which ultimately knocked Juventus out of the Champions League and sent Los Blancos into the semi-finals.

‘Another Calciopoli if refs lose rights’

Refereeing chief Marcello Nicchi has warned that another Calciopoli could hit Italian football if officials lose their right to vote at the top of the game.

The Italian Referees’ Association (AIA) stands to lose its 2 percent voting allocation in the FIGC’s Federal Council, and Nicchi claimed it was an open door to more ‘meddling’ behind the scenes.

“To undermine the independence and impartiality of our referees could mean the start of a new Calciopoli,” he told Radio Anch’io Sport.

Nicchi: ‘Lazio fans scandalous’

The head of the referees’ association, Marcello Nicchi, calls Lazio fans taking Marco Di Bello to court “scandalous”.

A group of Biancocelesti supporters have filed a class action lawsuit against Di Bello and Piero Giacomelli, as a result of their decisions in the defeat to Torino in December.

“Recently there were sit-ins and more against the referees and no-one said a word about it,” Nicchi said in a Press conference today.

Nicchi: 'Serie A set VAR example'

Refereeing chief Marcello Nicchi said Serie A officials have “set the example for the whole world” on using VAR technology.

VAR has been used in Serie A throughout this season and will now be adopted at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

“It’s obvious that when talking about innovation, there are always some teething problems, but all the referees gave up on their vacation time to work hard and make sure we had VAR in place from the first day of the season,” AIA President Nicchi told Lady Radio.

‘Serie A might give up VAR’

The head of Italian referees has admitted for the first time that “I don’t know if VAR will be in Serie A next season.”

VAR has yielded mixed results on its top-flight debut in Italy, with the advantages it offers arguably being outweighed by controversial decisions and confusion over when it is consulted.

“I don’t know if VAR will be in Serie A next season, but I think it will be and we’re working so that it can work better,” Marcello Nicchi told Rai Sport.
