Extra refs plus goal-line technology

President of the Referees’ Association Marcello Nicchi claims goal-line technology “can co-exist” with extra officials.

In Serie A goal-line technology should be introduced next season, but they do currently use goal-line referees.

“I hope they will stay as well next term,” AIA President Nicchi told news agency ANSA.

“However, they need to hurry up with the technology, as they cannot keep dragging their heels on this beyond March. It’s purely a structural issue.”

‘We should’ve voted Albertini...’

AIA President Marcello Nicchi hits out at FIGC counterpart Carlo Tavecchio for his decision to favour the clubs over the referees.

The President of the Referees’ Association was furious over the recent requests for an integral draw of referees, which he categorically dismissed, and particularly angry with Italian Football Federation chieft Tavecchio, who seemed open to the suggestion.

Nicchi: ‘Referee draws nonsense’

Marcello Nicchi, President of the Italian Association of Referees (AIA), speaks categorically against the calls for an 'integral draw' of referees.

The protest was kick-started by Lazio President Claudio Lotito, who demanded a revision of the current system in which referees are assigned specifically to certain matches, and asked instead for a random draw.

Goal-line tech 'waste of money'

Referees Association President Marcello Nicchi insists goal-line technology in Serie A “would be a waste of money.”

The calls for the technology to be introduced in Italy grew this weekend after a ‘phantom goal’ incident in Milan’s 2-0 win over Udinese.

It has already been used successfully at the World Cup in Brazil and in this season’s Premier League in England.
