Dzeko, Roma's next Batistuta?

Roma are about to secure a major coup by signing Edin Dzeko, which Aman Sehdev believes could have a similar impact to Gabriel Batistuta's arrival in 2000.

Much like the rest of Roma's 2015 summer transfer exploits, the pursuit of Edin Dzeko has been a long drawn-out affair. When the Capital club first registered their interest in the Bosnian forward early this summer, Manchester City demanded €30m. Sporting director Walter Sabatini initially balked at the figure touted to him, but such was his desire to land the former Wolfsburg man that he initiated negotiations in an attempt to lower the asking price.

Introducing Roma's Doumbia

Roma welcome a genuine goal threat to the Olimpico in the form of Seydou Doumbia. Aman Sehdev looks at the African Champion's credentials.

The departure of Mattia Destro to Milan forced Roma to look elsewhere for attacking reinforcements in the January transfer window. Hardly a ‘panic buy’, though, Ivory Coast forward Seydou Doumbia is a product of years of scouting from sporting director Walter Sabatini, dating back to when the Italian was signing talent for Palermo.

Batistuta ‘could have joined Lazio’

Former Lazio President Sergio Cragnotti reveals the club almost signed Gabriel Batistuta before he joined Roma.

The Argentinian striker spent nine years at Fiorentina, but the Viola were forced to sell him due to financial difficulties.

Batigol joined Lazio's bitter rivals Roma in a €25m deal, and fired the Giallorossi to the Scudetto with 20 goals in his first season, but Cragnotti reveals things could have been very different.

When Batigol could not stop scoring

It is 20 years this week since Gabriel Batistuta embarked on an historic goalscoring run at Fiorentina. Giancarlo Rinaldi reminisces.

The great champions are not like you or I. They don't seem to feel pressure or, if they do, they know how to handle it better than the rest of us. And few could cope better with the nerve-jangling demands of Serie A in the 1990s than Gabriel Omar Batistuta.

Love Hurts

Affairs of the heart took centre stage at the weekend as two amorous adversaries went head to head. Giancarlo Rinaldi watched football collide with the plot of a piece of romantic fiction.

Drama, passion and intrigue are often elements of the Italian game but never more so than at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris on Sunday. Inter's Mauro Icardi and Sampdoria's Maxi Lopez have been the protagonists in Serie A's most publicised love triangle since Wanda Nara left the latter for the former. The events which played out when the pair met in Genoa were worthy of any soap opera.
