Ones to watch in Week 17

Christmas is approaching, in what is usually a quiet period for Serie A. Yet with the winter break not until January 6, the Scudetto race is as hot as ever.

All of the top five dropped points in Week 16, so none of the challengers can afford to get it wrong this weekend.

Here’s what to watch out for in Week 17 of Serie A.

Inter bells

Inter kick the weekend off against Udinese at home, knowing a win will see them stay top of Serie A for another seven days.

Bologna want Napoli’s Rog?

Bologna are reportedly weighing up a January swoop for peripheral Napoli midfielder Marko Rog.

According to Resta del Carlino, Bologna have identified Rog as the ideal replacement for Saphir Taider, who is likely to move on next month after reaching an impasse over a new contract with the Rossoblu.

The Croatian joined Napoli last year for €13m but has made just four starts in one-and-a-half seasons at the San Paolo, including none in his 18 appearances this term.

Higuain can match Rossi

Gonzalo Higuain will match Antonio Conte and Paolo Rossi if he scores for Juventus against Bologna on Sunday.

The Argentinian striker has scored 43 goals in 77 games since joining the Bianconeri from Napoli in the summer of 2016, meaning it takes him slightly under two games to score one goal.

His record so far has him 40th in the all-time top-scorer list for the Old Lady, but he can match two club legends this weekend.

Pjanic back for Juventus

Miralem Pjanic trained with Juventus today and should be fit to face Bologna, but Gianluigi Buffon, Giorgio Chiellini and Juan Cuadrado are all doubts.

The Bianconeri currently sit third in Serie A, and play on Sunday afternoon, after leaders Inter and second-placed Napoli.

Max Allegri’s side can’t afford any slip-ups at the Renato Dall’Ara, and there was good news for the Coach today as Pjanic returned to training with the rest of the group.

Giacomelli rested for Week 17

Piero Giacomelli hasn’t been given a Serie A game this weekend, after his controversial refereeing in the Lazio-Torino game on Monday.

The Biancocelesti were incensed by the official’s decisions in their 3-1 defeat, and insisted there’s a campaign against them.

Today the AIA has announced the referees for Week 17, and Giacomelli hasn’t been assigned to a match.

Referees aren’t always involved every week, but this could be a way of taking the Trieste native out of the firing line.

Verdi: 'I won't leave Bologna'

Simone Verdi assures he won’t leave Bologna in January, despite Inter and Napoli interest. “I want to end the season here.”

The winger is the most two-footed player in Serie A, as confirmed by his ability to score two free kicks – one left-footed, one right – during the same match.

“I am definitely not leaving Bologna in January, as I want to end the season here,” Verdi told Sky Sport Italia.

“That doesn’t necessarily mean I’m staying for several more years, but I am happy here.”

Suso: 'Milan better with 4-3-3'

Suso called new Milan Coach Gennaro Gattuso “a great motivator” and hopes “we don’t change tactics again, as 4-3-3 is the right system.”

The Rossoneri ended their negative streak with a 2-1 victory over Bologna last night.

“We knew that it was a very important game, as this had been a negative period and three points were sorely-needed,” Suso told Mediaset Premium ahead of this evening’s Christmas dinner.

It was the first victory since Vincenzo Montella was sacked to make way for Gattuso.
