Serie B appeal to Government

An appeal from five clubs has been sent to the Italian Government in a bid to resolve the chaos around Serie B, but Virtus Entella wouldn’t sign it.

The situation is reaching critical point after a series of conflicting and contradictory legal rulings.

This chaos erupted over the summer when Avellino, Bari and Cesena went bankrupt, but rather than replace them with sides from Serie C, the FIGC and Lega Serie B opted to simply reduce the division to 19 clubs.

Crotone: 'Chievo penalty ridiculous'

Crotone President Gianni Vrenna called the three-point penalty to Chievo for false accounting “ridiculous. It’s almost as if they planned the timing too.”

The Calabrese club appealed to have Chievo’s penalty imposed from last season, which would’ve allowed them to take the place of the Flying Donkeys in the top flight.

Official: Chievo risk 15 point deduction

The FIGC’s prosecutor has officially requested that Chievo be deducted 15 points for alleged false accounting.

The Flying Donkeys are accused of trading players with Cesena, who later went bankrupt, creating “fictitious profits” of €25m to allow them to continue to register for Serie A.

The first trial saw Cesena deducted 15 points, but a procedural error meant the charges against the Veronese club had to be resubmitted.

New hearing for Chievo

Chievo face a new hearing over alleged false accounting, despite avoiding punishment today.

The Flying Donkeys were not charged due to a technicality, with the prosecutor erroneously denying the club a hearing by July 15, thinking that the deadline had expired.

As a result, the FIGC returned the case to the prosecutor's office, to resubmit the charges in the proper manner.

There will therefore be a hearing next week, after which the court can fix a date for a new trial, which SportMediaset believes will be between August 6 and 10.

Crotone appeal Chievo decision

Crotone have confirmed they’ll “proceed immediately” with a new trial after Chievo’s Serie A status was confirmed.

The Flying Donkeys were under investigation for alleged false accounting in a number of deals with Cesena.

Today though the FIGC ruled it could not proceed with the case, so the Veronese club stay in Serie A with no points deduction.

Had they been deducted six points for last season as requested by the prosecutor, Crotone would have been in the top flight instead.

Chievo stay in Serie A

Chievo will stay in Serie A for the 2018-19 season after the FIGC ended its investigation into allegations they deliberately inflated the figures of transfer dealings with Cesena.

The Verona club were accused by the prosecution of inflating the value of player transfers by up to 9000 per cent, in order to make them appear more valuable than they were.

Cesena, who were in Serie B last season, have since been declared bankrupt and are currently not registered to play in a League next term.

Serie B in chaos

Pro Vercelli’s President describes Serie B “chaos”, as it’s not clear who will replace Bari and Cesena.

The two clubs failed to register for the 2018-19 season due to financial difficulties, and will be declared bankrupt.

Provided the mayor of the respective cities can find new investors, the two clubs will start again in Serie D, while Avellino have been granted more time to come up with a guarantor so they can register.
