Spanish Cup Final 'in front of fans'

Basque rivals Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao have announced their intention to hold the Spanish Cup Final in front of fans.

La Liga announced earlier today that clubs in Spain’s top two divisions could restart training this week, in a step towards its 2019-20 campaign being fulfilled.

However, this season’s Copa del Rey Final – contested between two Basque teams - looks like being delayed until next year as they both want the doors to be open.

Athletic Bilbao target Higuain

Athletic Bilbao are interested in signing Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain for next season, claim reports in Spanish paper Marca.

The 32-year-old is under contract with Juve until June 2021 and has contributed eight goals with eight assists in 33 competitive games this season.

According to Marca, Higuain would be able to pass the strict Athletic Bilbao criteria because he is the great-grandson of a Basque man who emigrated to Argentina.

Zaniolo sorry for Roma handball

Nicolo Zaniolo has apologised for not owning up to a handball that earned Roma a 2-2 draw with Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday

Roma were trailing 2-1 until the last few minutes, when the referee deemed an Athletic player to have blocked a cross with their arm.

Replays showed it hit Zaniolo, but the Italy starlet refused to confess and Lorenzo Pellegrini equalised from the penalty spot, despite protests from the Giallorossi’s opponents.

“I made a mistake in Perugia this evening,” the 20-year-old wrote on Instagram.

Roma scrape 2-2 Athletic draw

Roma fought back twice for a 2-2 friendly draw with Athletic Club Bilbao, although there was a red card, Aleksandar Kolarov scorcher and cheeky Nicolò Zaniolo incident.

The game was played at Perugia’s Stadio Renato Curi and Edin Dzeko, reportedly on the verge of a €20m transfer to Inter, was on the bench.

Amadou Diawara made two errors in front of the defence in the opening 26 minutes, one of them leading directly to a goal, as Inaki Williams could thread through for Iker Muniain.

Despite fears he would be absent, Edin Dzeko is in Roma’s squad to face Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday.

However, the striker has been called up for the Giallorossi’s friendly against Athletic, which kicks off at 19:00 BST this evening.

Elsewhere, Patrik Schick is out of the squad with a knock but Gregoire Defrel is included as his proposed switch to Cagliari remains up in the air.

Athletic Bilbao want Berenguer

Athletic Bilbao are reportedly interested in Torino forward Alex Berenguer, but are unwilling to meet the €10m asking price.

According to Matteo Pedrosi and TuttomercatoWeb.com, the Basque club are interested in the winger, but deem the €10m valuation too high and are only willing to offer somewhere between €7.5m-€8m plus bonuses.

The Liga side and Toro President Urbano Cairo have reportedly already been in contact, but are some distance for finding an agreement for the 23-year-old.

Ancelotti up for Spanish role?

Carlo Ancelotti could be set for a return to La Liga as Athletic Bilbao are reportedly courting the Italian.
