New Napoli, new Liverpool

Napoli may have a rather different squad to last season unlike Liverpool, but the Partenopei must be wary of the Reds’ new-found steel, writes Sam Wilson.

“Normally it’s the European champions who are favourites but we hope it ends the same way as last year’s game at the San Paolo. We’ve bolstered our squad with the addition of some quality players. I think it will be a great game – hard-fought and intense.”

'Liverpool aware of Hazard-like Insigne'

Trent Alexander-Arnold is confident Liverpool have learnt from their defeat to Napoli last season and warns Lorenzo Insigne is “like Eden Hazard”.

The Scouser and the Scugnizzo

Liverpool should not be warning their fans to avoid Napoli ultras, but rather encourage a twinning of two very similar cities, writes Susy Campanale.

It is somewhat ironic to see Liverpool warning their fans to treat the trip to Naples like a war zone, with warnings to “remain in their respective hotels to eat and drink” lest they become targets for “petty theft, robbery and assault.”

Llorente out for Liverpool 'revenge'

Fernando Llorente says he will be out for ‘revenge’ when Napoli face Liverpool in the Champions League this evening.

Llorente knows Liverpool well from his time in English football with Swansea and Tottenham Hotspur, but the striker made it clear Carlo Ancelotti did not need his expertise.

“Ancelotti knows our opponents very well and he’s studied them better than all of us,” he said at a Press conference.

“We need to have a perfect match, play a great game and keep errors to a minimum.

Probable line-ups: Napoli-Liverpool

Napoli are expected to start Lorenzo Insigne as a left midfielder and Fernando Llorente up top against Liverpool this evening.

Carlo Ancelotti is set to stick with his tried-and-trusted 4-4-2 formation, but with the added physicality of Llorente alongside Dries Mertens in attack.

The target man knows Liverpool well, having spent the last three years in English football with Swansea City and Tottenham Hotspur.

That should see Insigne line up out wide on the left, as opposed to his usual position of second striker.

Napoli: Milik back for Liverpool

Napoli have Arkadiusz Milik back against Liverpool, who are without Divock Origi and possibly Andy Robertson.

Milik had been missing for the past month with an abdominal injury, but the striker has been passed fit for the visit of Liverpool tomorrow.

However, Elseid Hysaj is out and Gianluca Gaetano has been reserved by the club’s Primavera side, who take on the Reds in the UEFA Youth League.

As for the Champions League holders, Robertson has travelled to Naples but will require a fitness test in the morning.

'Napoli stubborn in a good way'

Jurgen Klopp has warned his Liverpool players to expect a Napoli side who are “stubborn in a very positive way” tomorrow night.

Klopp’s Liverpool begin the defence of their Champions League crown at the San Paolo, which they also visited in the group stage last season, losing 1-0 to a late Lorenzo Insigne goal.

“Napoli had another really good season, they have started the new one well,” the Coach said at a Press conference.

Ancelotti: Napoli have improved

Carlo Ancelotti believes Napoli will face “the best team in Europe” tomorrow but warns Liverpool that his side are better than they were last season.

Napoli beat Liverpool 1-0 in the same fixture last season, but the Reds went on to knock them out of the Champions League group stage and win the trophy.

“Liverpool have grown because last season gave them so much awareness,” Ancelotti said at a Press conference.

“On the other hand, we’ve also grown because we’ve added more quality to their squad.
