Sokratis snubs Lazio for Olympiacos

Former Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos had been heavily linked with Lazio and Genoa, but it’s now reported he’s going to Olympiacos.

He is a free agent after terminating his contract with the Gunners six months early.

While a return to his old club Genoa had been floated, Lazio seemed a very likely destination just this morning.

However, a few hours later, reports from Greece emerged that Sokratis was heading home to Olympiacos.

Sokratis set for Lazio transfer

Sokratis Papastathopoulos is expected to sign for Lazio as a free agent after his Arsenal contract was terminated.

The defender had also been linked with a return to his old club Genoa, but the Gazzetta dello Sport and Sky Sport Italia now claim Lazio have secured a deal.

The Greek international had six months left on his Arsenal contract, but rather than negotiate a transfer fee, the Gunners decided it was better to simply terminate it early by mutual consent and allow him to find his next club.

Official: Sturaro joins Hellas Verona

Stefano Sturaro has officially completed his transfer from Genoa to Hellas Verona, on loan with option to buy.

The midfielder turns 28 in March and Genoa had purchased him outright from Juventus following a loan for €16.5m in the summer of 2019.

He made just seven competitive appearances for the Grifone this season, scoring one goal against his former club Juve.

Sturaro also represented Modena and Sporting Lisbon during his career.

Serie A Week 19 referees

The AIA has announced the referees for Serie A Week 19, with Maurizio Mariani given Milan-Atalanta on Saturday and Antonio Giua overseeing Lazio-Sassuolo.

The Serie A teams are halfway this weekend and Milan finish off the first rounds of fixtures with a home leg against the Orobici at San Siro.

Atalanta return to their home ground in the Champions League 2019-20 and 38-year-old Mariani will be at the whistle for his first Serie A meeting between the two sides.

Sassuolo: 'Scamacca talks with Juve and more'

Sassuolo director Giovanni Carnevali confirms ‘we are meeting with Juventus for Gianluca Scamacca, but also clubs abroad.’

The striker is currently on loan at Genoa, but is expected to terminate that early for a transfer elsewhere after a great start to the season.

The 22-year-old scored six goals in 16 competitive games, along with one assist.

Lasagna set for Verona transfer

Sportitalia claim Udinese striker Kevin Lasagna is on the verge of a move to Hellas Verona for €10m plus bonuses.

The 28-year-old had also been linked with Benevento, but it seems as if Verona have won the race for his signature.

He scored two goals with one assists in 16 Serie A appearances this season.

Lasagna earned seven senior caps for Italy, with his first coming in October 2018.

The centre-forward is expected to join Verona over the next few days.

Juve to meet Sassuolo over Scamacca

According to Tuttosport, Juventus and Sassuolo directors will meet today to discuss Gianluca Scamacca’s possible move to Turin.

The Old Lady are reportedly on the lookout for a new centre forward to back-up Alvaro Morata, with the 22-year-old on top of their shopping list.

Juventus and Sassuolo directors are expected to meet today as the Bianconeri will play the Italian Supercup Final at the Mapei Stadium against Napoli this evening.
