Sassuolo 'not convinced' by De Zerbi

Sassuolo owner Giorgio Squinzi warns he is “not entirely convinced by Roberto De Zerbi, Khouma Babacar” or their defenders this season.

The Neroverdi are set to finish comfortably mid-table, but it’s not enough to satisfy the club patron, who reserved particular criticism for his Coach and centre-forward.

“We need a strong striker, like Simone Zaza and Gregoire Defrel, who both played for us,” Squinzi told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Sassuolo renew with Matri and Pegolo

Sassuolo have officially extended their contracts with Alessandro Matri and Gianluca Pegolo to June 2020.

Both had been due to become free agents next month, but will instead be wearing the Neroverdi jersey next season.

Striker Matri turns 35 in August and contributed three goals in 20 competitive appearances this term.

Goalkeeper Pegolo is already 38 years old, but remains the understudy to Andrea Consigli, featuring four times this season between Serie A and the Coppa Italia.

Pegolo has been at Sassuolo since 2013.

Reports: Juve to sign Merih

Juventus have reportedly exercised an option to sign Sassuolo and Turkey defender Merih Demiral.

Merih joined Sassuolo from Sporting CP in January and has gone on to start 13 of the Neroverdi’s Serie A games, scoring twice against Chievo.

However, Gianluca Di Marzio’s website writes Juve reserved a right of purchase for the 20-year-old, set at €15m.

Di Marzio explains the Old Lady have decided to take up that option after holding talks with his representative Franck Trimboli earlier in the week.

Game of Champions League thrones

As the season finale approaches, Football Italia’s Chief Correspondent Richard Hall considers who from Atalanta, Inter, Milan and Roma deserves Champions League football.

The history of Italy has often been linked to Northern powers and the Papal States. Often in the tussle lies a smaller yet politically-relevant state. While we're not at a time when Sforza’s Borgias vie for power, the struggle for being one of the biggest names in Europe continues. This week in Serie A, the apparent protagonists for Europe’s elite club competition have done their duty, disappointed, imploded and - in one case - fought above their station. Now, as the final week approach, the true character of each will be tested.

The same applies to games involving Empoli, Fiorentina and Genoa, all of whom will be fighting to stay up.

The FIGC has also confirmed that Bologna-Napoli will also be played at that time if the Rossoblu fail to get the point they need against Lazio on Monday.
