Report: Smalling close to Roma return

Roma are reportedly on the verge of signing Manchester United defender on another paid loan but with an obligation to buy for €12m next summer.

Sky Sport Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio claims the Giallorossi have managed to haggle the asking price down after continuous negotiations with Manchester United.

Roma brought Smalling on a paid loan ahead of 2019-20 with an option to buy the player for €20m this summer.

Cellino: 'Tonali only wanted Milan'

Brescia President Massimo Cellino confirms Sandro Tonali had a deal with Inter, but ‘wanted no other options’ when he heard Milan were interested, rejecting Barcelona and Manchester United.

The 20-year-old grew up supporting the Rossoneri, so was understandably enthusiastic about the idea of joining the red and black side of San Siro.

“I know that Beppe Marotta really wanted Tonali, and that Antonio Conte appreciated him, so I think his agent had agreed terms with Inter,” Cellino told Top Calcio 24.

Roma progress for Smalling

Roma have reportedly increased their offer for Chris Smalling, while the Manchester United defender only wants the Giallorossi.

The situation has been dragging on for months, as the Italians were hamstrung by the club takeover by Dan Friedkin from previous owner James Pallotta.

This has brought in fresh funds and Sky Sport Italia claim there has been significant progress in negotiations today.

Smalling spent last season on loan at Roma and made a huge impression in his 37 games, including three goals.

Commisso: 'No offers for Chiesa'

Fiorentina President Rocco Commisso insists there have been ‘no offers’ for Federico Chiesa, so the player ‘must tell us what he wants to do.’

There were reports today of Milan making a bid for Chiesa, proposing Lucas Paqueta plus €20m in exchange for the Italy international, after Inter, Juventus and Manchester United seemingly turned their focus elsewhere.

Marotta: 'Pogba best deal of my career'

Inter director Beppe Marotta reveals the ‘best deal’ of his career was getting Paul Pogba for free at Juventus and selling him back to Manchester United for €100m.

It was a remarkable double transfer swoop for the Bianconeri and remains the highlight of Marotta’s wheeling and dealing.

“A director tries to bring players in relatively cheap and sell them on at a significant profit,” said Marotta during a Q&A event in Rimini this evening.

Milan still chasing Chiesa?

Sportmediaset claim that Milan are making a genuine approach to sign Fiorentina star Federico Chiesa this summer.

It’s going to be incredibly difficult, considering the Viola want circa €70m for the attacking wide man, and are not prepared to accept player exchanges.

Nonetheless, interest from other clubs has waned significantly over the last few months, with Inter, Juventus and Manchester United focusing on other targets.

Roma revive Smalling talks

Roma are back in negotiations with Manchester United for Chris Smalling, as they can raise the €20m by selling Patrik Schick to Bayer Leverkusen.

The defender spent last season on loan at the Stadio Olimpico, but could not agree terms to make the deal permanent or even keep him for the rest of their Europa League campaign.

There were other offers from the likes of Inter, Newcastle United and West Ham United, but Smalling always had his eye on a return to Rome.

Only Milan for Tonali now

Sandro Tonali is expected to complete his transfer to Milan next week, as Inter pulled out of talks with Brescia and Manchester United are too late.

Inter had a deal with Brescia to take him on loan with option to buy at the end of the season for a total €35m, but after showdown talks with coach Antonio Conte, decided to look at other targets instead.

The coach much prefers more experienced figures like Arturo Vidal of Barcelona, seeing the 20-year-old as too green.

Reports claim Manchester City have a meeting with Lionel Messi’s father, while Inter, PSG and Manchester United are also in the running after handing in his Barcelona transfer demand.

The club legend wants to leave after the 8-2 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich, arrival of new coach Ronald Koeman and growing sense of unease at Camp Nou.

The favourites would appear to be Manchester City, as Pep Guardiola already worked with Messi at Barcelona.
