Giovinco joins exclusive club

Sebastian Giovinco has joined an exclusive group of players to have scored in three elite club competitions.

Giovinco scored the winning goal for Al-Hilal as the Saudi side defeated Esteghlal FC 1-0 in the AFC Champions League group stage on Tuesday.

He netted in last year’s CONCACAF Champions League Final, when Toronto FC lost to Mexican club Guadalajara on penalties after they drew 3-3 on aggregate over two legs.

The 32-year-old, who only joined Al-Hilal in January, managed a total of four goals for Toronto in the CONCACAF Champions League.

“No player has won Leagues in Europe, the US and Saudi Arabia,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

Giovinco’s call concerning

While Sebastian Giovinco’s call-up to the Italian national team is being celebrated across MLS, Marco D’Onofrio explains why it may be a worrying sign for fans of the Azzurri.

Sebastian Giovinco’s Toronto FC were officially eliminated from MLS play-off contention when they fell 2-1 at home against Canadian rivals the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night. Just a year after setting a new league record for most points in a season and lifting the Philip F Anschutz trophy as MLS Cup champions, the Reds didn’t even qualify for the post-season in 2018.

Giovinco is back in the Italy squad after three years away, having been exiled for his decision to play in MLS with Toronto FC, but Balotelli and Belotti were dropped for their lack of form and fitness.

“Giovinco’s been doing well for several years, he’s 31, we’d been monitored him for a while and we wanted to see him in the flesh,” Mancini said at a Press conference.
