VAR Nightmare

Serie A introduces VAR in every game from this season, but Susy Campanale sees a potential disaster looming on the horizon.

VAR (Video Assistant Referees) are finally being implemented after decades – at least in Italy’s late-night TV review shows – of complaints and demands. The idea was greeted with declarations that it’d end the Juventus hegemony in Serie A, suddenly resolve all protests and fix a broken game. That was before people saw it in action. Now they’re starting to realise what I’d warned for a while: this is going to make things even worse.

Nicchi: 'Serie A ready for VAR'

Chief of Italian referees Marcello Nicchi is sure the new VAR system will be welcomed by officials in Serie A this season. “Tests have been encouraging.”

The use of video replays viewed by two match directors in the stands has been adopted in several international tournaments, including the Under-20 World Cup and Under-21 European Championship.

It will be used in Serie A from the start of the 2017-18 season, following on from goal-line technology.

No true Italy-Germany

This Italy-Germany was more lop-sided than any that have come before, which is why Andrea Tallarita expected a win.

It's always a bit of a special business, when the Germans play the Italians. The two represent perhaps each other's most important historic rival, and they play by two styles so antithetical that it makes sense to call them different philosophies. They also seem to always produce tense, spectacular matches that go down to the wire.

Italy’s second match syndrome

Costa Rica may seem favourable opposition, but Luca Persico warns of how second group stage games have recently proved problematic for Italy.

Italy can qualify for the Round of 16 of the 2014 World Cup - depending on the outcome of England-Uruguay - with a victory against Costa Rica. It is seemingly a perfect scenario, but history shows that they should be wary.

Capello: 'Italy showed how to beat Spain'

Fabio Capello believes Brazil were only able to beat Spain in the Confederations Cup Final thanks to “the lesson from Italy.”

The Russia Coach was impressed by both nations in the tournament last month, a warm-up for the 2014 World Cup. Brazil won the Final 3-0.

“The big question was how Brazil were going to take on a Spain side that everyone knows very well but have found difficult to stop,” he told FIFA.com.

Giaccherini proving Azzurri worth

Coach Cesare Prandelli was ultimately vindicated in calling up Emanuele Giaccherini to the Confederations Cup, says Luca Cetta.

Andrea Pirlo, Neymar, Paulinho, Andres Iniesta, Sergio Ramos and Luis Suarez. A stellar cast of players deemed by FIFA to be standouts of the 2013 Confederations Cup. Yet having watched all of Italy’s matches, I can’t help but feel they’ve nominated the wrong Azzurri player. Forgetting for a moment the popularity factor usually attached to these awards, there was a diminutive Italian who went from maligned inclusion to tournament luminary.
