Imperious Italy fly the flag

Italy's 5-0 win against Liechtenstein last night confirmed the Azzurri had got their pride back, regardless of which colour they wear, writes Vijay Rahaman.

The Azzurri wore green on Saturday... and won. They wore white in Vaduz on Tuesday night... and won. Italy's flag contains the colours of these two plus red, but the 1968 European champions traditionally play in blue as the house of Savoia that ruled on the peninsula from 1846 to 1946 colour was blue.

However, it does not seem to matter what colour the national team dons when they take to the field under Roberto Mancini as their mindset remains the same, and one would sense that the previous rulers would not mind too much, as long as they honour the shirt.

Mancini: 'The record I want...'

Roberto Mancini shrugged off a 5-0 victory in Liechtenstein and the record of Italy wins. “I’d rather match the record of winning two World Cups!”

The Azzurri were already qualified for Euro 2020, but confirmed their 100 per cent record this evening with a 5-0 result in Vaduz.

Mancini equals Pozzo record

Roberto Mancini has equalled the all-time record of nine consecutive Italy victories, set by World Cup winner Vittorio Pozzo in 1938-39.

This evening’s Euro 2020 success away to Liechtenstein by 5-0 ensured a 100 per cent record still stands in Group J.

It also proves historic for Mancini, as before this, the only Italy Coach to have won nine on the trot was Pozzo.

This was achieved from May 1938 to March 1939, beating Belgium, Yugoslavia, Norway, France, Brazil, Hungary, Switzerland, France again and Germany.

Mancini: 'Sport to unite, not divide'

Italy Coach Roberto Mancini believes “sport is the only thing that can truly unite people and not divide them,” speaking of his experiences in Turkey.

It has been a tense few days in the Euro 2020 qualifiers, with England’s game against Bulgaria suspended twice due to racist abuse from the stands, while Turkish players could be penalised by UEFA for making military salutes after their matches.

Mancini: 'Italy not far behind the best'

Roberto Mancini maintains sides like France, Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands and Germany are “not that far ahead” of Italy going into Euro 2020.

The Azzurri qualified for the tournament with three games to spare after winning seven out of seven, while it could be eight tonight against Liechtenstein.

“We’re playing again after three days, so it’s a chance for some players to rest and others to make their mark,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

Italy's opportunity to experiment

With Italy punching their ticket to Euro 2020, Anthony Barbagallo identified areas of the team where Roberto Mancini should experiment.

Just two years after missing out on the World Cup, that passionate spirit has been reignited among many Italian fans. It felt like an eternity since we last saw the players and fans with smiles etched across their faces. With the Italian flags and shirts absent in Russia last year, the Azzurri supporters can now take these items out of their closets and put them on display at next year’s monumental Euro 2020.

Probable line-ups: Liechtenstein-Italy

It’s all change for Italy against Liechtenstein in a potentially historic match, as Giovanni Di Lorenzo should make his debut, with Andrea Belotti and Nicolò Zaniolo stepping in.

It kicks off in Vaduz at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT), although the Azzurri have already qualified for Euro 2020.

They are also guaranteed top spot in Group J thanks to seven wins out of seven.

Coach Roberto Mancini has won his last eight matches, so a ninth would equal the all-time Nazionale record set by Vittorio Pozzo in 1938-39.

Mancini laughs off Pozzo comparisons

Italy CT Roberto Mancini has laughed off possibly matching Vittorio Pozzo’s run of nine straight wins. “We still have two World Cups to catch up on...”

Mancini is victory over Liechtenstein away from equalling the run of nine set by Pozzo, who led Italy to successive World Cup triumphs in 1934 and 1938.

“I’d like us to finish top of the group, reaching 30 points and giving minutes to those who have played less until now,” he said at a Press conference.

“A strong rapport has been created between the players and Mancini,” the Juventus defender said at the Festival dello Sport.
