Serie B: Lotito slams 'crazy' Ventura

It looks as if Gian Piero Ventura is getting the sack after Salernitana failed to qualify for the promotion play-offs, as President Claudio Lotito was caught on camera calling the coach ‘crazy.’

The former Italy tactician had been tasked with taking Salernitana into Serie A, or at the very least the promotion play-offs.

They had been in pole position last night, until a shock 2-1 home defeat to Spezia.

Serie A Seasons: Fiorentina 1998-99

Fiorentina were top of Serie A at the start of February 1999, until a series of calamities in the second half of the season left them wondering what could’ve been...

Words: Livio Caferoglu

It was all going so well for Fiorentina, who were bidding to win their first Scudetto in 30 years. Crowned winter champions midway through the 1998-99 season, they self-destructed spectacularly to not only finish outside the top two, but also exit the UEFA Cup at the hands of supporters (literally) and lose the Coppa Italia Final to Parma. So how exactly did potentially the Viola’s greatest-ever campaign end with only a measly runners-up medal to show for their efforts?

Pressure on Lotito to stop training

Pressure is growing on Claudio Lotito, who owns both Lazio and Serie B side Salernitana, after complaints he is trying to force players into training during the coronavirus pandemic.

The AIC (Players’ Association) released a statement this week warning they would take strong action if clubs tried to call players into training sessions or even to have their temperature checked rather than doing it themselves at home.

Ancelotti and Gattuso: A shared history

As Rino Gattuso takes the Napoli reins from sacked Carlo Ancelotti, it’s worth looking back over their history together. "I think you’re the right person in the right place."

Gattuso joined Milan in the summer of 1999 from Salernitana and had already cemented himself in the heart of the Milan midfield by the time Ancelotti replaced Fatih Terim in November 2001.

Together the pair won two UEFA Champions League trophies, one Scudetto, two European Super Cups, one Coppa Italia and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2007.

Ventura hails Mancini's Italy reign

Former Italy CT Giampiero Ventura has hailed Roberto Mancini’s reign. “I’m in full agreement with the work he’s done.”

Mancini replaced Ventura after Italy’s failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup and has gone on to not only revitalise the national team but also leave them on the verge of the Finals at Euro 2020.

“Mancini until now has been very good, beyond the calibre of teams he’s faced, and I’m in full agreement with the work he’s done,” the Salernitana boss told Julia Italia.

Lazio to sign Polish midfielder

Poland Under-21 midfielder Patryk Dziczek is undergoing a medical at Lazio this morning.

However, Dziczek will not hang around for long as he will be turned over to Serie B side Salernitana - owned in part by Lazio President Claudio Lotito - on a season-long loan.

The 21-year-old plays for Piast Gliwice in the Ekstraklasa and has represented Poland at several youth levels.

He will become the latest Pole to ply his trade on Italian shores after the likes of Krzysztof Piatek, Wojciech Szczesny and Bartlomiej Dragowski.

Serie C side Feralpisaló took the lead in the opening 60 seconds of their trip to the Stadio Paolo Mazza, as Maiorino was at the back post to meet a Ceccarelli cross.

Federico Di Francesco equalised immediately thanks to a spectacular volley, then Mattia Valoti finished off a well-worked team move.

Coppa: Monza to face Fiorentina

Silvio Berlusconi’s Monza shocked Serie B side Benevento to set up a tie with Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia third round.

Monza won a seven-goal thriller, surviving a late penalty to beat Benevento 4-3, and face Fiorentina in the next round.

Feralpisalo, Pisa, Perugia, Salernitana, Venezia, Crotone, Spezia, Sudtirol, Cremonese and Imolese, meanwhile, all secured Serie A ties.

So did Chievo, although the Flying Donkeys needed a penalty shootout to avoid a giant-killing at the hands of third-tier Ravenna.
