Italy international Sandro Tonali has been charged with misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of The FA’s Betting Rules. If he’s found guilty, the Newcastle midfielder could face two possible scenarios.

Tonali is currently serving a 10-month ban after admitting to placing bets on football through illegal platforms during his time at Milan and Brescia. The suspension, determined by the Italian FIGC, was effective from October 27, 2023, and will end on August 27, 2024.

However, according to Gazzetta, there are two possible scenarios for the ex-Milan midfielder following an official FA statement on Thursday.

If Tonali is found guilty, the English FA could decide that the FIGC ban already covers breaches of The FA’s Betting Rules, so the 23-year-old would return to action at the end of August this year.

However, Tonali’s ban may be further extended, especially considering the high number of breaches—if confirmed—in a short time.

Gazzetta highlights that the longest ban for a Premier League player found guilty of breaching The FA’s Betting Rules is eight months for Ivan Toney who admitted 232 violations between 2017 and 2021.

Newcastle said Tonali “continues to fully comply with relevant investigations” and that “due to this ongoing process, Sandro and Newcastle United are unable to offer further comment at this time.”
