Happy birthday David Trezeguet

Today is the 41st birthday of David Trezeguet, Juventus’ all-time leading foreign goalscorer.

Born in Rouen, France while his father Jorge was playing for FC Rouen, Trezeguet grew up in his parents’ native Argentina.

His father was a defender during his playing career, but would take the young David to watch River Plate matches and tell him to keep his eye on the strikers.

Serie A clubs back on song

For the first time in close to 13 years, four Italian teams won in the Champions League in the same round of fixtures.

Last night saw Lorenzo Insigne’s late winner for Napoli defeat Liverpool, while Inter came back from a goal down to beat PSV in Eindhoven.

On Tuesday night Roma beat Viktoria Plzen 5-0, while Juventus eased to a 3-0 win over Young Boys, thanks to Paulo Dybala’s hat-trick.

The last time four Italian sides won their matches dates back to November 2005.

Dybala makes hat-trick history

Paulo Dybala has become only the fourth Juventus player to score a Champions League hat-trick, following Pippo Inzaghi, Alex Del Piero and Arturo Vidal.

He bagged his first treble of the tournament in this evening’s match against Swiss side Young Boys.

La Joya follows in the footsteps of some Juventus legends to have scored three in a single Champions League game – clearly not counting the European Cup in its previous incarnation.

Marotta points to Juventus pragmatism

As Beppe Marotta leaves Juventus, Adam Digby explains why this is simply another example of the Old Lady putting pragmatism ahead of sentiment as the Bianconeri make another cold and calculated business decision.

At the weekend Beppe Marotta gave an interview to Sky Italia, something the Juventus CEO has done at every match over the last eight years. On each previous occasion, the conversation has followed a thoroughly predictable format; discuss the previous match, talk about whichever player is in the news, dodge an obvious question about possible transfer targets and always speak respectfully about the opponent no matter if it’s Benevento or Barcelona.

Unleashing Insigne's potential

Lorenzo Insigne is flourishing in his new role with the 4-4-2 formation, so Vilizar Yakimov asks can the Napoli man become Italy’s next fantasista?

With five goals in the opening six rounds of Serie A, Lorenzo Insigne is currently enjoying his best start to a season ever. The talented Italian also added his first assist against Parma on Wednesday and has simply been unstoppable since Carlo Ancelotti decided to change the formation after the heavy 3-0 defeat against Sampdoria.

On This Day: Del Piero’s first UCL goal

On this day in 1995, a 20-year-old Alessandro Del Piero scored his first Champions League goal for Juventus.

Only 16 teams competed in the competition in those days, and the Bianconeri were drawn in a tough group with Dortmund, Steaua Bucharest and Rangers.

The first game of the group brought a trip to Germany, and the hosts took the lead after just one minute through former Juventino Andreas Möller.

The equaliser came 13 minutes later though, Del Piero swinging in a cross from the left that was met by Michele Padovano.

Del Piero: 25 years of Juve

Alessandro Del Piero is celebrating 25 years since his Juventus debut and recalls winning the Champions League in 1996 as his best memory.

Del Piero joined Juve from Padova in 1993 and made his Bianconeri debut on September 12 of that year, coming on for the final 15 minutes against Foggia.

“Kiddo, go on. My advice: keep the ball and draw some fouls,” the former Italy attacker remembered his then-Coach Giovanni Trapattoni as saying in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport.

Del Piero: Ronaldo like LeBron James

Alessandro Del Piero has compared Juventus’ signing of Cristiano Ronaldo to LeBron James joining Los Angeles Lakers.

Ronaldo’s arrival over the summer was seen as a statement of intent from Juve that they were targeting the Champions League, while the Lakers signed arguably the world’s best basketball player in James after eight years of no NBA conference titles.

Del Piero questions Ronaldo

Juventus icon Alessandro Del Piero has questioned Cristiano Ronaldo for not attending last week’s Champions League draw.

Ronaldo reportedly chose not to attend the draw after Luka Modric was named UEFA’s best player of last season, and Del Piero made it clear the Juve new boy could have conducted himself in a more dignified manner.

“Giving the award to Luka Modric was the right decision,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

Del Piero: Juve rapport ‘not personal’

Alessandro Del Piero admits his relationship with Juventus was ‘not personal’ like those Ryan Giggs and Sir Alex Ferguson had with Manchester United.

Del Piero put pen to paper on a ‘blank’ contract with Juve in 2011, but it later emerged that Juve only offered him an extra year and the Bianconeri icon subsequently left the club at the end of the 2011-12 campaign.

“We had numerous experiences together,” the 43-year-old told Sky Sport Italia.
