On This Day: Del Piero’s first UCL goal

On this day in 1995, a 20-year-old Alessandro Del Piero scored his first Champions League goal for Juventus.

Only 16 teams competed in the competition in those days, and the Bianconeri were drawn in a tough group with Dortmund, Steaua Bucharest and Rangers.

The first game of the group brought a trip to Germany, and the hosts took the lead after just one minute through former Juventino Andreas Möller.

The equaliser came 13 minutes later though, Del Piero swinging in a cross from the left that was met by Michele Padovano.

Del Piero: 25 years of Juve

Alessandro Del Piero is celebrating 25 years since his Juventus debut and recalls winning the Champions League in 1996 as his best memory.

Del Piero joined Juve from Padova in 1993 and made his Bianconeri debut on September 12 of that year, coming on for the final 15 minutes against Foggia.

“Kiddo, go on. My advice: keep the ball and draw some fouls,” the former Italy attacker remembered his then-Coach Giovanni Trapattoni as saying in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport.

Del Piero: Ronaldo like LeBron James

Alessandro Del Piero has compared Juventus’ signing of Cristiano Ronaldo to LeBron James joining Los Angeles Lakers.

Ronaldo’s arrival over the summer was seen as a statement of intent from Juve that they were targeting the Champions League, while the Lakers signed arguably the world’s best basketball player in James after eight years of no NBA conference titles.

Del Piero questions Ronaldo

Juventus icon Alessandro Del Piero has questioned Cristiano Ronaldo for not attending last week’s Champions League draw.

Ronaldo reportedly chose not to attend the draw after Luka Modric was named UEFA’s best player of last season, and Del Piero made it clear the Juve new boy could have conducted himself in a more dignified manner.

“Giving the award to Luka Modric was the right decision,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

Del Piero: Juve rapport ‘not personal’

Alessandro Del Piero admits his relationship with Juventus was ‘not personal’ like those Ryan Giggs and Sir Alex Ferguson had with Manchester United.

Del Piero put pen to paper on a ‘blank’ contract with Juve in 2011, but it later emerged that Juve only offered him an extra year and the Bianconeri icon subsequently left the club at the end of the 2011-12 campaign.

“We had numerous experiences together,” the 43-year-old told Sky Sport Italia.

Marchisio's final show of Juve love

Claudio Marchisio could've been a weight on Juventus this season, so because of that love, he let the Old Lady go. Richard Hall salutes Il Principino.

He didn’t have to do it, his contract ran until 2020, yet Claudio Marchisio’s love for Juventus saw him mutually rescind his deal and leave the club which he adores so much. His picture on social media of him as a boy donning a Juventus shirt said: “I can’t stop looking at his photograph and these stripes on which I wrote my life as a man and a footballer”. There ended a 25-year affiliation with The Old Lady, professionally at least. It was a move that anyone involved with football can sympathise with, as it would’ve been heart-wrenching to do.

Del Piero: ‘CL priority for Juventus’

Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero sees the Champions League as “a priority” for his former club this season.

The Bianconeri have dominated domestically in recent years, winning Serie A for the past seven seasons in a row and the Coppa Italia for the last four.

However, they lost the 2015 and 2017 Champions League finals, and haven’t lifted that trophy since 1996, when Del Piero was in the team.

On this day: Germany 0-2 Italy

On this day in 2006, Italy beat Germany 2-0 in the World Cup semi-final, in one of the best matches in modern times.

The Azzurri had beaten Australia and Ukraine in the knockout stages, but faced a daunting task in Dortmund against the hosts.

Marcello Lippi’s men had the first chance of the game, but Jens Lehmann smothered the ball at Simone Perrotta’s feet after a clever pass from Francesco Totti.

Bernd Schneider should have put Die Mannschaft ahead, but he fired over Gianluigi Buffon’s crossbar.
