ADP: ‘Buffon farewell like mine’

Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero hopes Gianluigi Buffon will be “saluted by the whole stadium as happened to me”.

The Bianconeri’s all-time top-scorer and appearance-maker bid farewell after the final game of the season against Atalanta in 2012, sparking emotional scenes in Turin.

Having been substituted, Pinturicchio went to sit on the bench but the stadium demanded that he take a final lap of honour, collecting scarves all around the pitch as the game went on in the background.

On this day 20 years ago, Juventus beat Inter 1-0 in a controversial match at the Stadio delle Alpi.

The Bianconeri were defending champions, but led Serie A by just one point from Luigi Simoni’s side when the two met with four games remaining.

The hosts opened the scoring after 21 minutes, thanks to a goal from top-scorer Alessandro Del Piero.

Picking up the ball in his trademark position out on the left wing, the young forward surged in to the Nerazzurri box.

Del Piero: ‘Buffon was wrong’

Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero doesn’t agree with Gianluigi Buffon’s criticism of Michael Oliver - “I found it hard to understand, honestly”.

The English referee awarded Real Madrid a last-gasp penalty in the Champions League quarter-final last night, knocking the Bianconeri out and possibly condemning Buffon to end his career without lifting that trophy.

After the match the goalkeeper was scathing in his assessment, calling Oliver “an animal” and claiming he has “a trash can in place of a heart”.

Del Piero: ‘Genuinely emotional’

Alessandro Del Piero says it was “genuinely emotional” to be inducted into Italian football’s Hall of Fame yesterday.

The Juventus legend, who won the World Cup with Italy in 2006, was admitted yesterday in a ceremony in Florence, and he reflected on the day on his official website.

“When I arrived at Coverciano for the lunch that preceded the ceremony for the entrance to the FIGC’s Italian football Hall of Fame, I reflected of how I dreamed with those two shirts: one black and white, the other blue,” Del Piero wrote.

“Juventus and Roma are great teams and going through is still possible,” Del Piero told RMC Sport.

“Anything can happen, even against great teams like Real Madrid and Barcelona. The psychological aspect and the desire for redemption could be crucial.
