Farewell, Maestro Pirlo

Andrea Pirlo stood out above all others because he never put himself above all others, argues Andrea Tallarita.

You will never understand Andrea Pirlo, the latest of the Italian World Cup winners in 2006 to hang his boots, if you see him as anything but part of a greater whole.

The former Inter, Milan and Juventus midfielder played after an idea of football that was entirely based on being part of a team. He was a director of play, a student of opportunity, someone whose brilliance emerged by extracting the brilliance out of his fellow teammates.

Happy 120th birthday, Juventus

Today marks the 120th anniversary of the founding of Serie A’s most successful club, Juventus.

The club was founded on November 1, 1897 by students from the Massimo D'Azeglio Lyceum school, and initially wore pink and black kits.

It was in 1903 that the famous Bianconeri kits were adopted, with then Juve player Tom Gordon Savage sourcing black and white kits from his hometown side, Notts County.

Savage had met his wife, Sarah, in Turin and had two children in the city, Ettore and Richard Savage.

Insigne: 'Del Piero is my hero'

Napoli star Lorenzo Insigne reveals an unexpected name for his football hero – Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero.

“I have always said, even if it upsets the Neapolitans, that my hero is Del Piero, because for me he was a great player and is a great man,” Insigne told Dugout.

“The first team I played for was Olimpia Grumese, then from there I went to Napoli. The first trophy I won was as best player in a youth tournament in Turin. The trophy was bigger than me! I was very proud.

Del Piero: ‘Dybala, be like me’

Alessandro Del Piero says Paulo Dybala "has everything to stay at Juventus for life, if he wants to".

The Argentine forward inherited the number 10 shirt this summer, and Pinturicchio is perhaps its most celebrated wearer.

“I’m so happy,” Del Piero told Gazzetta dello Sport when asked about Dybala.

“The 10 wasn’t really my property: before me Robi Baggio, [Omar] Sivori and [Michel] Platini had worn it. And now there’s a superstar who has everything to stay at Juve for life, if he wants to.

Del Piero: ‘Juventus more vulnerable’

Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero sees his former side as “more vulnerable” this season, after six Scudetti in a row.

The Bianconeri are just two points off the top of Serie A after six wins in seven games, but Napoli are leading the way while playing some spectacular football.

“I see Juve as more vulnerable than in previous years,” Del Piero admitted in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I always see them as number one favourite, but with less of a margin. And this Napoli is absolutely worthy of the Scudetto.
