Juve and Napoli target Cavani

Edinson Cavani is a target for both Juventus and Napoli this summer and the PSG man’s brace for Uruguay against Portugal showed why.

The striker is now 31 years old, but his work rate remains second to none and he scored two sensational goals in tonight’s 2-1 World Cup Round of 16 victory.

He also pulled up with a muscular problem in the second half and faces a race against time to be fit for the quarter-final against France in six days.

World Cup: Cavani knocks out CR7

Edinson Cavani bagged a brace to beat Portugal 2-1 and then limped off injured, as Uruguay will face France in the quarter-final.

There were plenty of Serie A representatives in the 22 starting in Sochi, including Matias Vecino, Rodrigo Bentancur, Lucas Torreira, Diego Laxalt, Martin Caceres and Joao Mario, but Milan forward Andre Silva was dropped to the bench.

Uruguay took first blood with a sensational diving header from former Napoli and Palermo striker Edinson Cavani on the end of a Luis Suarez cross at the back post.

World Cup: Uruguay take top spot

Uruguay sealed first place in World Cup Group A, with a 3-0 win over 10-man Russia.

Both sides were already through to the Last 16, but hosts would win the group as long as they avoided defeat.

Oscar Tabarez switched to a back-three for this one, with Sampdoria’s Lucas Torriera joining Rodrigo Bentancur of Juventus and Inter’s Matias Vecino in midfield.

Things didn’t start well for Russia, with Luis Saurez firing in a low free-kick with only 10 minutes on the clock.

Higuain tough act to follow

Juventus must be careful when considering a change, as there are very few strikers who can replace Gonzalo Higuain, warns Vilizar Yakimov.

Gonzalo Higuain has always been a contradictory figure. The Argentinian’s bizarre ability to produce world class displays in one game and unbelievable misses in the next has been dividing opinions ever since he moved to Europe in 2007.

The €90m that Juventus paid to lure him away from Napoli two years ago only increased the controversy and media interest surrounding Higuain. If you walk around Turin and ask the locals if Higuain has lived up to that price tag, one thing is certain - you’ll get plenty of contrasting answers.

Report: PSG approach Dybala

French media are reporting that Paris Saint-Germain have approached Juventus star Paulo Dybala to replace Edinson Cavani.

According to Paris United, with a story that spread rapidly in France and Spain, Dybala initially asked his agent to meet with Real Madrid in March, but negotiations did not get far.

Instead, PSG took the first step and approached the Argentina international as a replacement for striker Cavani.

Juve have been linked with Cavani if Gonzalo Higuain leaves Turin, so this could in theory spark a transfer domino effect.

Cavani remembers ‘beautiful’ Mazzarri

Edinson Cavani admits he has kept “beautiful images in my heart” of the time he worked under Walter Mazzarri at Napoli.

Cavani scored over 100 goals in three seasons under Mazzarri, before following the Coach out of Napoli in 2013, and the Paris Saint-Germain striker wished his former mentor all the best at Torino.

“We all have beautiful memories of him,” he told Tuttosport in an open letter.

Hamsik already a Napoli legend

Marek Hamsik hasn't just broken Napoli records, writes Emmet Gates, but over a decade embedded himself in the fabric of the club and the city.

As Dries Mertens rolled the ball across the turf at the Stadio San Paolo in the 38th minute against Sampdoria, Marek Hamsik knew this was it: the chance to make history.

It was an opportunity that had looked inevitable, to break a record that loomed over and consumed him for months and weeks, to overtake Diego Maradona as the club’s record goal-scorer.

Of course he didn’t miss, delicately lifting the ball over the on-rushing Emiliano Viviano into the roof of the net to give Napoli the lead, and indeed the victory.

‘Cavani has Napoli return in mind’

Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani would like to return to Napoli one day, according to his agent.

Cavani enjoyed three prolific seasons at Napoli before joining PSG in 2013, although the 30-year-old has made no secret of his desire to play for the Partenopei again before he hangs up his boots.

“He’s very happy, he’s about to write himself into PSG’s history and they’re top of the League,” Fernando Guglielmone told CalcioNapoli24.
