De Canio new top Albania candidate

Edy Reja will reportedly not take the Albania job after Christian Panucci was fired, as Gigi De Canio is the new favourite.

According to Sportitalia, the negotiations to bring former Atalanta, Napoli and Lazio Coach Reja to Albania ground to a halt on Sunday.

He had been in the stands to watch the 2-0 home defeat to Turkey, the opening Euro 2020 qualifier that proved the final straw for Panucci.

However, talks hit problems over both the salary and the length of the contract.

Reja set for Albania job

Former Lazio and Napoli Coach Edy Reja is expected to take over from sacked Christian Panucci as Coach of Albania.

The 73-year-old has not worked since leaving Atalanta in the summer of 2016.

He has emerged as the hot favourite and is reported to be in advanced negotiations with the Albanian Football Federation to take the job.

Panucci was sacked this morning after losing the opening Euro 2020 qualifier 2-0 at home against Turkey.

Official: Albania sack Panucci

Christian Panucci has been sacked as Coach of the Albania national football team following a defeat to Turkey.

The Euro 2020 qualifiers got off to the worst possible start with a 2-0 home loss to Turkey last night.

That proved the final straw for the Federation, who dismissed the tactician this morning.

The next Albania fixture against Andorra will be overseen by Ervin Bulku and Sulejman Mema.

Lautaro and Calhanoglu on target

Lautaro Martinez and Hakan Calhanoglu were on target for Argentina and Turkey, but Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal stalled with Ukraine.

Several Serie A stars were in action today on international duty and made quite an impact.

Inter striker Lautaro Martinez was in the starting XI for Argentina, alongside returning Leo Messi, in a friendly with Venezuela in Madrid.

Although ‘Toro’ was on target with a counter-attacking goal, it was Venezuela who emerged with a surprise 3-1 victory.

Albania drop tardy Strakosha

Lazio goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha missed his flight and was cut from the Albania squad as punishment by Coach Christian Panucci.

The shot-stopper was reportedly held up by the notorious traffic in Rome and didn’t get to the airport in time.

Despite assuring Panucci and the Albania team organisers that he’d get the very next flight to Tirana, Strakosha was informed he should not bother turning up to the training camp.

He’ll therefore not take part in the Euro 2020 qualifiers against Andorra and Turkey.

Panucci: Ranieri right for Roma

Christian Panucci says ‘no-one ever called me’ from Roma but believes Claudio Ranieri is the ‘right’ man to steady the ship.

Panucci made over 300 appearances for Roma as a player and had been linked with replacing Eusebio Di Francesco before Ranieri was confirmed as caretaker.

“No-one ever called me, there was no kind of call from the club,” the former Italy defender told Radio Anch’io Sport.

Ranieri 'favourite for Roma job'

Claudio Ranieri has emerged as the favourite to take charge of Roma, but Fabio Capello wants Eusebio Di Francesco to see out the season.

Calciomercato.com reports Ranieri has ‘surpassed’ Christian Panucci in the running to succeed Di Francesco, whose position seems untenable after Roma’s Champions League exit to Porto on Wednesday.

The website explains that while Vice-President Mauro Baldissoni ‘already has a yes’ from ex-Bologna boss Roberto Donadoni, the squad are ‘pushing’ for Ranieri or Panucci.

Report: Roma consider Panucci

Former Roma and Italy defender Christian Panucci has been put forward as a possible successor to Eusebio Di Francesco.

Calciomercato.com cites a report in Friday’s edition of Il Messaggero and adds the track that leads Panucci back to Roma will become ‘hot’ in the event Di Francesco is dismissed.

The Giallorossi boss is under increasing pressure at the Olimpico and could lose his job if they lose at Milan on Sunday.

Panucci, for his part, made over 300 appearances for the Lupi between 2001 and 2009, winning the Coppa Italia twice.
